What hole does stanton fill- why empty the farm for a player with nowhere to play (unless you're throwing in Harper or convincing the Marlins to take on Werth)

It would fill the empty news void that we normally have this time of year.

That void in the lineup with the guy who hits 50 home runs. It fills that void.

Stanton hits 50 hrs? Over the past two years he has our first basemen (morse in '11 and Laroce in '12) beat by a combined total of 7 hrs

At age 23 lat season he hit 37 home runs in just 123 games.  He will hit 45+ next year.

And when he's putting up 50 HRs a year in two years when Morse and LaRoche are out of baseball?

The way the Marlin's lineup is constructed, he'll be lucky to see 45 hitable pitches next year

Those trades won't happen. Let's be practical here. What do the Marlins need that we have? Fans. Maybe we can sweeten the deal with these fans who keep bringing up video game trades over and over again.

I don't know what the Marlins line up has to do with Stanton hitting cleanup for the Nationals

As great as it is to see all the "what if" talk for Stanton, it just isn't going to happen.  Yes, I agree that he will hit 50+ bombs a year within a year or two and I have a feeling he will be doing that for the next decade.

MDS, LaRoche and Morse will still be playing in two years.  In six they will both be gone and Stanton will be well along on his way to the HOF.  Nats really don't match up enough with the Fish to get him and I don't think anyone team sans maybe Texas has enough bullets in the minors to land him.  Remember that Stanton is getting league MINIMUM and the fish will only let him go for young long term controlled talent.

This may be one of those cases where he has to ride out his time in Miami and then jump ship in FA and become a crazy well payed guy similar to what A-Rod did while with the Mariners (even though the M's were competitive at that point).

Wouldn't  need a bullpen if we had Stanton and BamBam hitting 50 dingers each

What would it take to get both Stanton AND Fielder?  Maybe we could get verlander too?

I'm crossposting this from the lefty reliever thread but what about signing ALR and sending Morse and HRod to the M's for Luetge and Capps.  That finishes out the pen with another lefty and a hard throwing righty who are both young and controllable.

Solid middle of the order bat for bullpen filler- makes sense

http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/nationals-journal/wp/2013/01/06/what-about-rafael-soriano/

Kilgore brings up Rafael Soriano.  I like it.  Giving up the pick shouldn't be an issue.  If HRod and Garcia prove up to the task, we could trade Soriano at the deadline.

Maybe Brian Wilson or Valverde make sense too.

You are overvaluing Morse and obviously didn't look at who I said we would trade Morse for.  Luetke is a high leverage lefty who can throw hard but has a nasty sinker and can fill the lefty bullpen role for a long time.  Carter Capps is a righty who can touch 100 and has the command and stuff to either be a closer or replace Clippard.  Morse will not sign for one year and is in the last year of his contract.

Looking back, I would have just kept Hammer and taken draft picks for him.  I remember it was kind of a risk at the time - he was also kind of injury prone and not a lock to reach the threshold for free agent compensation.

Then take the Draft pick next year,  I'm extremely skeptical of the term long time being applied to relievers
