A little late to the party, but you're more than welcome to join the future fun. Terps fans rejoice!

just b/c i'm not happy with the results, doesn't mean i'm not a terps fan.

not that hard to understand.  and once again winning 6 games in two years, backs up my evidence they haven't been good.

today was a great day for the program. win 8-10 games next year and we're in business. our offense should be awesome for the next 2-3 years at least.

Following recruiting is so dumb. No one has any idea how good anyone will be. The fact that people pay for recruiting services like Scout and Rivals is laughable.

That jump from the ACC to Big Ten will be bigger than you think.

I'm not concerned about our offense keeping up with the Big 10 in 2014. Stefon Diggs as a junior, Deon Long as a senior, Wes Brown as a junior and one of our QBs will be proven by then. Should have no problem keeping up with the good B1G offenses.

I'm just saying, it's a bigger difference than most realize.  ACC seems more similar to the Big 12 in terms of style of play than the B1G.  I'm assuming UMD is starting to recruit to that, but it'll take a couple of years to adjust.

Completely slipped my mind.   You are correct on this count.   What passed as a great class in the ACC probably won't mean much in the Big10.

IDK, I think I saw where it was ranked as a top 25 class, right?  That's put it about 5th in the B1G this year.

Depends on what site you go by. One, either Scout or Rivals has us 31 and the other has is 49. That would be good for either 4th or 9th in the B1G. Either way, about as good a class as any Fridge got us, at least on paper.

Totally agree.  One of the main factors of stars is how much money a kid's family/school has to get him rated.  It is pretty much a joke.
No, they actually watch game film.

Don't let the truth get in the way... Talent shows through and scouts find it. They miss on some, and some kids miss on their chance, but generally, stars play like stars.

It's still an inexact science and it is skewed towards population bases, but it is based on actual on field performance as well as some projection of what may happen in the future.

It's just a balance of school offers, production, and eye-ball tests. If Rivals/Scout evaluators were that amazing, they'd be working for schools and earning much more money. Their evaluations are weighted heavily on the schools offering. Then they tweak them based on camp production, in-season production, and word of mouth.

As a whole, they are not terribly accurate predictions of future talent. Way too much development happens between 18 and 22 for a football player, not to mention off the field distractions.

Another thing with offers, schools will also pounce all over someone with an impressive offer. In baseball, I've seen a top 10 out of state school offer a kid based on camp performance. It was his first major offer, and then all the offers came flooding in.

Football example of that: Frankie Hammond Jr. Was rated low, no one had heard of him. Miami offered. Then Florida threw an offer. BOOM, 4 star. He was a huge bust, btw.

It's a very inexact science, and certainly not worth the $100 / year or whatever they charge, at least to me.

no, way, it's not worth paying for, totally agree with you there, but at the very top, they're pretty accurate.  I agree with a lot of what you say.  There are things they can't measure, of course, like how a kid will respond to that level of conditioning and coaching.  Also difficult to project for a kid that is just late to develop, but your four and five star kids do hit with a pretty high rate of accuracy.  And a three star kid is still pretty damn talented.  But by and large, with a couple of exceptions, the schools that get the most highly rated talent, are the ones winning the most games.  That's not really deniable.

But they're also not just throwing this stuff around blindly.  It is based on what information they have, readily admitting that it's not a complete picture of what a kid is or will be.

And, I wouldn't assume they'd be making more money if they were working for a school.  A lot of those guys at Rivals and Scout used to work at universities and left for these services.  They rate kids often before schools start offering and make adjustments as they get more film and information.  They also talk to the kids and coaches.  It really is more than a blind guess.

The best and brightest are 2nd teamers:

Calloway made headlines before arriving at Alabama—and shortly after. He committed to the Crimson Tide, then switched to rival Auburn and then signed with Alabama on national signing day. He was arrested in October 2011 on charges of second-degree marijuana possession.

Listed as a running back/tight on the Alabama roster, Calloway carried the ball 10 times for 63 yards last season as a sophomore and also recorded eight tackles on special teams.

Williams was a 5-star recruit out of Arnold High School in Panama City, Fla., and freshman defensive back on last year’s team. He did not play.

Pettway was a redshirt freshman defensive lineman last season and saw action in 13 games. He recorded eight tackles, including four tackles for loss and 2½ sacks.

Hayes was a freshman linebacker from Thomasville (Ala.) and also played in 13 games and totaled 14 tackles.

Look up Melvin alaeze or something like that. I think. He was part of Maryland's 2006 recruiting class. Let me just say I know where he's at right now.

Apparently, four Alabama players were arrested for breaking assault and theft against another student.
