not a chance.

wondering what the main difference between Chrome and Chromium is. from everything I've seen, Chromium is just Chrome without the Google Branding. right? so why use one over the other, besides "oooh i'm scared of teh google"?

Chromium is the framework, and the most leading edge version you can get.  It is then rebranded by Google to Chrome.

Similar to how you can run WebKit on a Mac, the bleeding edge framework that Safari is built on.

I would suggest that condescension is counterproductive when soliciting advice.

there was no condescension there when I typed it. you must have put it there.

i'm actually seriously considering Chromium. i started thinking about it when i discovered that Chromium is the default browser in the new Lubuntu derivative that's debuting with Lucid.

wondering why they chose to go with Chromium, instead of Chrome.

is Chrome appreciably more stable that Chromium? or is that not really a major factor?

i hear that Chromium gets updated every day.

Because part of Canonical's creed (the guys behind Ubuntu) is to release a fully open source OS.  Lubuntu is hoping to become an officially sponsored Ubuntu derivative so they are sticking to FOSS (my guess anyway).

Chrome is not fully open source software, Chromium is.

That's why it's considered "bleeding edge".  It's constantly updated with the newest code base.

and theoretically that leads to a good bit of problems for everyday users? or kinda sorta some nuisances but nothing gamebreaking?

I couldn't tell you with Chromium.  My guess is that they have a stable build just like Chrome along with the dev builds.

Please spare me your feigned indignance, your attitude towards anyone who questions Google is a matter of public record.

Tell yourself whatever you like, but when you take potshots at other people's opinions without provocation while simultaneously asking for advice, I AM going to call you on it.

Thanks for your time.

If that's your feeling, why bother responding to my original post?  It was just a suggestion, after all.

On-topic, it sounds like "real" Chrome would be the better choice for you.  Chromium sounds like a perpetual alpha/beta, and you mentioned some Google app features you like not working.  Seems like a no-brainer to me.

Plus Chrome is a pre compiled binary.  Chromium makes you compile source code to get it, or rely on the PPA version that I don't know is created by the Chromium team.

yeah, I had to add a PPA repo to Synaptic in order to install Chromium. I assume this repo is automatically updated.

well, the only real feature I want that I don't have is Offline access. and that's because 1) Google Gears doesn't work in the Linux versions of Chrome and 2) Google has completely abandoned Gears in favor of HTML5.

so either way, I'm basically waiting for Google to get off their asses and use HTML5 to do what Gears did.

Yes, it looks like they recompile and upload daily.

to the contrary, most of their major web apps have offline components now.

they just don't work in the linux version of chrome.

The calendar is addictively simple and very well integrated into gmail. Gchat to free SMS is also excellent.

Interesting. Installing Kylo anyway for when I hook my laptop up to the TV.

Dumb.  I don't get why the studios won't allow this kind of stuff.  They're turning people to pirate their stuff.  They just don't get it.

Adobe announces that Photoshop CS5 will be released on April 12th.

Cool demo of a new feature: http://www.geek.com/articles/chips/photoshop-cs5-content-aware-fill-demo-20100324/

Saw this earlier today, pretty slick.  No doubt the Iranian military will love that feature :icon_mrgreen:
