If you are referring to Burnett, he's only getting $8 million over 2 years and he's just 30 years old.

I would have no problem giving him that.
Alden Gonzalez (Angels MLB.com beat) initially reported the higher number.

I agree 2/$8MM is high, but not outrageous.

Weird offseason so far.  Dodgers are the new Yankees.  Yankees are the new Orioles.  Orioles are still the Orioles.  Not sure what the Red Sox are.

Barves treading water with Upton and maybe got a little worse with losing Bourn.  No replacement yet for Chipper.  They seem to have faith that their rotation will hold up but it doesn't look very strong to me.

No idea who the Phillies are starting in their outfield.  Dominic Brown and who else?  Also no 3rd baseman I think.

Wren was on MLB a bit earlier, said Prado is going to 3B.

They had Prado last year.  They need a replacement for Chipper's bat.

the red-sox are the anti-nats, a terrible team that just over-paid for a bunch of guys north of 30 on the downsides of their career.  I guess Dempster is a shoe-in for that team.

Dodgers have 8 guys making more than $11 mil per year.  5 guys making more than $15 mil.  3 guys making more than $20 mil.

Projected payroll of $195 mil.

And that is before signing Greinke.

We are heading towards ridiculous payrolls like that if we want to lock up all of our young core.

Baseball is changing. Big TV deals and stupid GMs will push prices on players higher and higher. Stupid large payrolls will become necessary to keep teams together.

The Yankees and Dodgers might both have $200+ million payrolls without projecting to be 90 win teams.

Yeah the Yankees are a mess.  The AL East looks totally up for grabs this year.  Blue Jays have as good a shot as any of them.  Hell they might be the favorites.

Kilgore wraps up the Nats at the winter meetings:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/nationals/nationals-wrap-up-their-winter-meetings-early/2012/12/05/8c9fe8ec-3f3f-11e2-bca3-aadc9b7e29c5_story.html

Highlights:
- the plan is still to sign LaRoche and trade Morse for a SP prospect.   Everyone is confident we'll keep LaRoche.
- says we're targeting J.P. Howell.
- The Nats are now an 8-1 favorite to win the WS.
- Assuming we nab LaRoche, our payroll should be around $115 million, 9th highest in the league

Good.  As rich as Lerner is, as rapidly as our fanbase is growing(both in DC and nationwide), as marketable as the players on the team are(not sure there is a pitcher that brings more electricity than Stras), this team is gonna have all the resources in the world to carry a high payroll.

Yanks are cutting down below $189 million by 2014, when the more punitive luxury tax implications take hold. They will be around $200 million again in 2013 (Already projected at $189 million per b-r, without having signed any players yet). That said, a ton of commitments end in 2013 so they can hit that mark in 2014. Among the Yankees who will be free agents next offseason: Derek Jeter (won't take the $8 million player option), Robinson Cano, Mariano Rivera, Andy Pettitte, Curtis Granderson, Hiroki Kuroda, Phil Hughes.

Of course, that still leaves them paying $100 million to CC Sabathia and filler (yes, I'm counting A-Rod and Tex as "filler" by then). Which means they're likely going to have a woeful team in 2014 by Yankees standards.

Nats are committed to about $97m in 2013 before adding in LaRoche and a lefty reliever.  They'll be at about $115m when done with the offseason.

Nats have lost LHP Daniel Rosenbaum to the Rockies and 2B Jeff Kobernus to the Tigers in the Rule 5 draft.

Kobernus was selected by the Red Sox then traded to the Tigers.

Both will be returned to the Nats if they don't stick all year on a major league roster.

2013 will be their 7th full season, and they will have their 7th consecutive payroll increase per USA Today.

Quote from: Ted Lerner, 05/04/06
"We feel that we had the opportunity to take a franchise and build it over a period of time, primarily by building up a very fine scouting [operation] and farm clubs," Lerner said during an interview at his downtown Washington office yesterday. "That's the number one priority."

I'm not a LAC/LANC regular, so I don't care.  But for me, LAC is dead and they don't have to become plaid-jacket Steinbrenner to prove it.  I'm going with FAP, Fans Aren't Patient.

I'd avoid using FAP too often on a message board.
