I wonder if they can somehow sneak him into the 2013 Arizona Fall League.

Yocum should seriously give us a "frequent shopper" discount.

So will Giolito be able to pitch for us if we make the playoffs next year?

Rizzo says Giolito suffered complete tear of UCL during his 1 and only pro start with GCL #Nats last week. Tommy John surgery next week.

Who did Solis?

As expected. The surgery will be performed in Los Angeles by Dr. Lewis Yocum, who was also the surgeon for Stephen Strasburg and Jordan Zimmermann. Solis, who was recently ranked as the Nationals' No. 8 prospect by Baseball America, will be shelved until the 2013 season. Feb 28 - 4:21 PM

I was shocked when I heard Dr. James Andrews on the radio the other day. I could never trust him to repair my arm.

Why because he's a billion years old?

Doubtful. He might be able to come back and get a couple innings in the GCL to just gain some confidence that he's healthy. But I don't see any way they'd put a 19 year old with minimal pro experience up against players that are near big league ready.

Hopefully he gets a couple innings next year, just to go into the off season and instructional league wthout any doubts in the back of his mind about his return.

Sounds about right. Any game action would be about confidence and not development.

giolito will be back and ready to pitch by september of 2013 so I expect him to be sent to the instructional league and then log some innings in the afl.  In 2014 I think he'll split time between hagerstown and potomac.  2015 he could get a few more starts at potomac to open the season, spend the rest of the minor league season at harrisburg, then get called up to be our trevor rosenthal/david price out of the pen in the playoffs.  And lastly, in my dream world, he'll start 2016 in the rotation when he will still only be 21 years old.

I like this future! (And it seems as accurate as we can be in October, 2012)

so should we shut him down in August of 2016?  Let the debate begin!

I don't think giolito will be handled too differently than most minor league pitchers because a) all teams are cautious with their top pitching prospects b) after the afl in 2013 he'll have the whole offseason to rest c) the minor league season is shorter than the mlb season so he will be pitching less regardless.

He's not pitching in the AFL next year. No chance. Even an aggressive team wouldn't do it. A cautious team like the Nats ... Simply not happening.

He'll be In the instructional league at this time next year.

ESPN Top 100 Prospects:
#77

Quote
Giolito might have been the first high school right-hander selected first overall in the amateur draft had he not suffered a small tear in his right UCL, an injury that ended up requiring Tommy John surgery in July after he signed and threw two pro innings.

Before the initial injury, Giolito hit 100 mph working as a starter, sitting 93-98 with a hammer curveball that he could manipulate to get more or less angle. He'd become more aggressive with better command in his senior year, showing great maturity for a 17-year-old who was already on the map because of his size and arm strength.

He'll need to work on his changeup and I'm sure pro hitters will force him to refine his fastball command, which just requires reps he won't get until late this summer. If he comes back fully healthy and can pitch a little this year, he'll move up into the top 20 in 2014, and perhaps in the high end of that group.

Giolito threw for the first time after surgery today.  30 ft. tosses.  Tweeted it felt great.
