This team is a freaking wreck! Way to address the offense in the offseason. Oh wait....we didn't address that because we didn't want to spend the freakING money to get Prince Fielder.  :bang: :bang: :bang:

Who is trailing Adam LaRoche in most categories (or was, I haven't checked lately). We need harder hitting outfielders and higher OBP middle infielders. And Zimm. And Morse.

LaRoche is off to a hot start and Fielder is off to a slow one.  I really hope Chin keeps it up but at the same time I think it's a safe bet to say that Fielder will finish the season with substantially better numbers.  That said, I don't think Fielder transforms the offense by himself, and Chin's glove is pretty valuable with RZ and Desmond on the other side of the infield.  There's no magic bullet, this offense is suffering from years of neglect and a couple of key injuries.

i still think it would have been a mistake to sign Fielder to an 9 year deal.  Of all the free agents from last year's class, the one I think you could have justified was Reyes.

At some point you have to sign someone knowing you're going to be paying 7+ years for someone not werth much beyond the first three.  Would Fielder have been a good signing for us this offseason?  I hate to say it but no.  That said, I don't see anyone in the next two FA classes that aren't either going to sign an extension with their current club or go to one of the AL powerhouses.

Talent costs money- the middle to lower tier free agents will probay never see Carlos Silva money again, but I don't see any reason to think salaries for top tier players will retreat

9 for Fielder was crazy for an AL team, let alone an NL team. I don't think NL teams can compete with the AL for prime sluggers anymore.

Yep. Where will I watch baseball once the NL adopts the DH?

This has gotten a little too doomy, even for this thread.

I agree with this- the AL has a couple of years of extra production for a slugger, so what could be 4 deadweight years for an NL team translates to 2 for an AL team, I also think these deals will be the new norm- Prince and Pujols just built on what Teix got

yeah, next year's FA hitting class is pretty putrid (assuming the Yankees keep Cano).

Cameron in today's chat speculated Hamilton get 6/$120MM given his issues.  That's a higher AAV than Werth but less money committed.

Yeah, I'm not sure which is more disturbing, the pouring of the acid or the position he'd need to be in to pull off that move.

Phil Woods was expounding on the Saturday morning show the other day that he thinks the AL will do away with the DH. He says the movement is already towards a DH that can play a position, that the risk of spending hundreds of millions on a one-dimensional player (think Adam Dunn) is too great.

Does he have a better finger-on-the-pulse than we do? Come to think of it, does he still have a pulse? :D

That's an easy fix. Expand the rosters to 27 players and they're good.

Remains to be seen- two extra at league minimium vs a dh at starting player salary
