Living in the post cortisone world…
« Topic Start: August 11, 2012, 05:58:40 PM »
It really is dramatic how much better the team, not just Ryan Zimmerman, has played.  I’ve been keeping an eye on the actually numbers and it is stunning.

Ryan acknowledged his injury after the final game in the Orioles series in Baltimore and just before the Rockies started in Colorado.  The shot was administered in B’more or Colorado…or on the plane ride between them.  The effect started in the second game of the Rockies series.  As of today, that was 42 games ago.  At 42 games, it’s no longer a “small sample size” as it’s more than a quarter of the entire season and more than a third of the games that have already been played.

In those 42 games, the Nationals have the best record in the majors (29-13, .690 winning percentage), followed by the Braves (27-13) and the Reds (27-14). We’ve compiled this record by going 12-8 at home and 17-5 on the road.  The Braves, on the other hand, have done it at home, 17-9 (home) and 10-4 (road).

We’re also #1 in runs scored per game in the NL with 5.45 runs per game (the Angels lead at 5.73 runs per game).  We’re #4 in runs allowed in the NL (7th overall) at 3.90.  We’re #1 in run differential per game at 1.55 post cortisone.

Of course, the one consistent thing, pre and post cortisone, as every Brave and Braves fan knows, is the Washington Nationals in first place in the NL East!

On August 11, 2011, we were 56-61. One year later, we're the best team in the National League.

Crazy.

And since the start of that Colorado road trip, Zimmerman is hitting over .300 with over .300 points of ISO power.

I'm still confused by this cortisone thing.

Has he healed enough to where the injury is no longer a problem?

Is the cortisone still working somehow?

Did he get another secret injection?

No.

Maybe.

Unlikely as they're really bad for your health.

Cortisone isn't actually helping him heal. It's purpose is to reduce inflammation around the injury, which relieves pain. As far as I understand it, Zimmerman has already had multiple cortisone shots this year, and will need surgery in the offseason.

Cortisone reduces inflammation, and the inflammation may not have returned, or now may be controllable with NSAIDs (like ibuprofen).

yup, he could actually be better. I hurt my ulnar nerve lifting weights and steroids helped the inflammation go down enough to heal.

Not that bad, at least according to my Dr.   He limits them to 3 or 4 a year, and he specializes in injections.

The cortisone shot was administered during the Baltimore series, and the effects kicked in that game.  I believe it was a Sunday game.

I was at the game, utterly shocked that Zim turned on a fastball, driving in a run.  Zimmerman has gone from a 0.0 WAR player at the start of that game to 2.9 today.  Even his fielding metrics are remarkably better.

Post cortisone world update, after the 14-run explostion:

#1 in winning percentage, 31-14 .689
#1 in road winning percentage, 19-6 .760 (fyi, the Nationals full season road winning percentage 40-22 .645 is higher than every other teams' full season home winning percentage)
#1 in per game, runs scored 5.62 runs per game (we wrestled this back away from the Angels)
#1 in per game, run deferential 1.67 runs per game

Another post cortisone update, this time with a five game losing streak included.

The streak sent us tumbling!...assuming you consider tumbling falling a few spots.

We've now played 62 post cortisone games with a 42-20 (.645 winning %).   That puts us #3 behind the As (who are on fire) 40-19 (.678) and the Reds 42-21 (.667).

Our home record is 19-11 (.633) which you'd think would be a good record is, #10.   There are a bunch of teams that have just been blazing at home over this period.  The White Sox lead the pack at 19-5 (.792) followed by the Tigers 25-8 (.758) and the As again 23-8 (.742).  Two other teams that have been good at home over this period, Seattle 22-12 (.647) and San Diego 17-9 (.654).

Despite the five game losing streak (4 on the road), we are still #1 on the road, post cortisone, 21-11 (.656).

As far as runs scored and allowed and differential, for runs scored we were in a battle with the Angels for most runs scored per game for most of the period but we've been joined by a third team, the Brewers.  The Angels are first averaging 5.51 runs per game.  The Brewers are #2 averaging 5.25 rpg and we are #3 averaging 5.24 rpg.

For runs allowed, we are #6 with 3.95 runs allowed per game.  The Rays are first giving up 3.08 rpg.  The Mariners (yes, the Mariners) are #2, giving up 3.35.  Some team from Atlanta is #3, 3.55 rpg.

We've fallen out of the top spot in run differential...fallen to #2 with a run diff of 1.29 runs per game.  The As (yes them again) are #1 with a run differential of 1.37 rpg.

The first time I ever saw Ryan in the field, I asked the guys at the game with me, "What's up with that kid's throwing motion?"

He's always had the most unnatural, ugly motion I've ever seen. Unless he has some physical issues, I don't understand why he can't fix it. And let's hope it's not psychological a la Knoblauch (sp?)!

Not doing a full update but I did notice that, as of today, we've played 64 post cortisone games, 32 at home and 32 on the road. The record in those 32 home games, 21-11.  The record in those 32 road games, 21-11.

Weirdness...

We've figured out our key post-trade deadline improvement.  Espinosa gets a cortisone shot for his bone bruise in his shoulder!
