3rd round pick also does not equal gamble. For example, from the 2005 draft (randomly selected) there is Brett Gardner alone who has >5 WAR 10 years into their pro careers.

From the 2000 draft, just 2 players have >5 WAR.

So (1) I'm not sure we've closed the door on Purke - he may still be a starter, he may have value as a RP, and (2) I kind of reject the notion that you can call him a "gamble" unless you're saying his chances of success were less than 1 or 2 out of 30 or whatever it is for any 3rd round pick.

Reason 2.

EDIT: I also think that he doesn't have to do much at the MLB level to justify the pick. I liked it at the time and still do, he's well worth the shot.

I think the "gamble" was the amount of money they gave him.

We can agree to disagree on that point. MLB teams hand out that kind of money for single years from TERRIBLE players all the time. It's the value of about .66 wins on the open market right now.

It's quite a bit for the draft, but as I said I have no idea why people view draft dollars as distinct from the entire team budget. More teams should have been taking "risks" like this and paying undermarket rates for lots of draft talent, hoping than some of them pan out. If Goodwin pans out, that'll make up for Purke. I don't view those guys in vacuums, they're part of the same strategy, which is basically throwing spaghetti against the wall and hoping some sticks.

If we had taken him in the 1st round, THAT would definitely have been a gamble. I'd say in the third round it's just an upside pick.

he was taken before the crackdown on bonus money, so it's a little bit of a closer case- still probably worth the risk though, but I think you have to compare him to other players who fell because of bonus demands not to other third round picks signing closer to slot

You're probably right. If you look at this website - http://www.angelfire.com/vt/prospectwatch/index201111.html - with all the 2011 bonuses in the first 10 rounds, I'd probably have preferred taking the $4.4 million on Purke and spreading it around to 4-6 other prospects in those rounds. Every round had a $750,000+ type player and if we took cheaper guys like Taylor Hill, Brian Dupra, Greg Holt, and Dixon Anderson in later round in order to pay for Purke for $4.5 million total, that's probably worse than having 5 guys for $900,000 each.

Fore!  Purke is 0-4 with a 9.37ERA and the Senators of Harrisburg are 4-14.  Rizzo

Control issues right now.

I don't understand the laughing at Rizzo. He wasn't the first guy to draft Purke.

He was the first one to draft him after he was injured.

As far as Harrisburg goes, it's AJ Cole and pray for rain.  This is the worst Harrisburg team we've had in a while.

Weren't the Potomac Nats pretty good last season? Shouldn't a lot of those guys be in Harrisburg?

Not so good today: 4 IP, 4 runs; 4 ER; 3-run homer in 1st. ERA now at 8.0. Third inning was 1-2-3, but the others were adventures...judging only from the game summary.

Purke to DL with elbow problem. That might explain things. TJ?

Eh, give him TJS, then he'll come back and be awesome. Can still get two or three good years out of him.

Purke goes for Tommy John tomorrow with Dr. Andrews.  Zuck notes that by the time he returns next May, he'll be out of minor league options.  Sigh...

I doubt there will be much of a bidding war for his services.

They'll probably DFA him when he's healthy and then sign him to a minor league contract.  The league passed on him for 4 rounds in the draft, so there's no reason to think teams will be clamoring for his services after showing nothing in the minors.  Right now, Rizzo is batting .500 on drafting injured players -- Purke's a bust, Rendon is a hit, and the jury is out on Giolito.

Nathan Karns belongs on the plus side.

he's on the 40 man so this isn't unsurprising, i'm sure he'll get a minor league contract from us or someone else.  I saw him pitch a few times in Potomac and he never really impressed, he just couldn't pitch consistently well.
