Olsen needs to consistently keep his rhythm going like he is now.  When he slows down and takes time b/w pitches, that is when the the ugly side of his pitching persona rears its ugly head.  He is looking really good right now, though, and the Braves must be wondering how they are getting dominated by him for the second time this season.

I have mixed feelings on Olsen more than any other pitcher on the staff.  He has the ability and can put up some real solid efforts, but he has very little consistency and a growing injury history.  It'd be nice if he could nail down a spot with a string of good performances, but it seems more akin to his baseball persona to come out and throw a stinker next week.  Of course, he has to finish this one first.

I've noticed that when he overthrows the ball from the beginning, he usually can't locate his pitches well at all. When his fastball is around 89-90, that's when he pitches well. Weird.

I think it was a lot closer than you guys think.  In every replay, and I slowed it down to watch it frame by frame, it looks like when the ball and the bat cross paths there's a change of direction.  It's subtle, but it's there.  I thought I heard the tip when I saw it live.

Thought I heard a "tip" too.    The call by the 3rd base ump was real BS.

I noticed this same problem when I was at his last start.  He was sitting around 92 MPH and damn was he struggling.  Probably just overthrowing like you suggest.

Does he lose movement at those velocities?

My guess is that at least his 2-seamer probably gets more flat, but like Ronny suggested, it is probably just a struggle with locating the ball when he overthrows.

Pa ... I'm not saying lannan will or won't be in rotation in 2013, but if he is its not the end of the world.  The last two years he has been a serviceable pitcher and since being recalled he has been decent.

The system has so many better pitchers. He can be a swingman or traded, but someone failed if that comes to pass.

On a team where 1-3 are set with quality SPs that's not a bad thing to have.  On this team, until Stras, Znn and whomever else runs with it get established, Olsen is just brutal to have being inconsistent.

I think Solis hits the majors at the break next season and the John Lannan Experiment ends.
