do the Phillies come for Laroche?
« Topic Start: October 10, 2011, 10:26:34 AM »
Just a thought, but with Howard out for most of next year, do you think the Phils have any interest in Laroche? Then maybe we can park big-body Michael Morse back at 1B.

Thoughts?

[Phil Wood] I think they'll sign Jim Thome. [/Phil Wood]

Jim Thome is too recent for Phil Wood's liking.

Yeah, he's still alive.

I'm serious... Wood actually suggested Thome to replace Howard next year.

The Phils will have a wealth of 1st base choices in the offseason.  Emphasis on word WEALTH

Doubtful anyone is willing to take LaRoche directly off the DL.

LaRoche is notorious for being a slow starter further tempering off-season interest.

Unlikely as teams seldom trade in the division if they can help it.

The Phillies are close to the luxury tax and are unlikely to cross the line.

Teams don't trade for players just because WNFF wants to get rid of them.

How many threads do we need to discuss the same thing?

1,400+. The more threads out there the better chance the Phillies see we want them to have LaRoche.

Unbelievable how condescending Woods is toward the idea that the Phillies would take LaRouche but then suggests a Thome as a replacement.

Not saying that LaRoche to Philly is going to happen.  But they won't be looking for a big name guy like Pujols or Fielder because they only need a stop-gap.  With the rise of Morse and how he fits in nicely at first we'd love to dump LaRoche.  And Woods suggestion that we wouldn't want to trade within the division is laughable.  (Milledge for Church, NJ and Bonafacio to Fla)

12:$20M, 13:$20M, 14:$25M, 15:$25M, 16:$25M, 17:$23M club option ($10M buyout)

that looks really ugly right now. Going into next year, the Phills have 112 million already committed with cole hammels going into to arbitration before becoming a free agent in 2013 (i.e. he's going to get a huge contract) and hunter Pence in year 2 of arbitration. I doubt they have the flexibility to do anything big

Chris Marrero could start and we'd find out if he's going to be decent. Or, thats 8 million we can throw at Pujols :D

Naw. I just would love to see the Phillies give us something for Laroche and take his salary. Then again, I'm absolutely loving watching Philadelphia fall flat on its face right now

Good signing for the Phils. In all honestly, Ryan Howard could be out till next year's All Star Break. So show off Jim Thome and then when Howard is healthy, they can trade him or keep him as a lefty pinch hitter.

Plus, this allows them to play Mayberry in LF, thus keeping Dominic Brown in Triple A (though I have no idea why)

I don't cheer when players get injured.

Easy to misinterpret, but I don't think that's exactly what he meant.

I think I understood it pretty well.

He's happy one of Philly's top players is out for half a year because it improves the Nats chances of winning.

There's a decent chance Thome replicates Howard's production, at least offensively.  There's nothing to rejoice about.
