Harris added that the Nationals would not have to worry about Goodwin’s attitude getting in the way of his skills. He raved about Goodwin’s character.

“Probably the most exciting part for us, the makeup matches the ability,” Harris said. “He’s a wonderful young man. He plays with a smile on his face. High energy, hard worker. When our staff talks to him, he looks you in the eye.”

That looks you in the eye thing. What coaches say about players' makeup is so weird. Earlier today I read a piece about Buster Posey and someone said, "he's really nice. He addresses you by your name." Huh?

it's just a respect thing.  I would imagine that a lot of these hotshots start to think that they are better than everyone else and start to think that politeness is for losers.

Buster Posey wouldn't last a day on this site.

Goodwin went 2-for-5 with a double and home run. For one scout, it was Goodwin that jumped off the paper Saturday night: "I honestly didn't realize he had that kind of power in him. He hit a couple balls really hard up the middle tonight."

I've seen too many Jordan Schafers and Lastings Milledges to get too excited about this latest "toolsy" outfield prospect.

Goodwin actually puts up numbers, though.  Destin Hood is the closest thing we have to a 'toolsy' type prospect - big, strong, fast, but hasn't put it all together yet.

Some notes on Goodwin from Sickels.  Says he might have 7 skills - what are the 6th and 7th tools?

----------

Brian Goodwin, OF, Washington Nationals
Bats: L Throws: L HT: 6-1 WT: 195 DOB: November 2, 1990

Drafted in the supplemental first round in 2011, Brian Goodwin has the best toolset in the Nationals minor league system, featuring above-average speed and power. He's still learning the nuances of stealing, but his defense in center field looks quite good, as he demonstrates plus range and a strong, accurate arm. With the bat, Goodwin had no problems in Low-A, showing sound plate discipline with above-average power, posting a terrific +36 percent OPS and a superb .468 SEC He skipped a level to Double-A and found that more challenging, as he fell into a bad habit of chasing breaking pitches and fastballs outside the hittable zone. This cramped his numbers down to a -6 percent OPS and .259 SEC. He has a good natural eye, so I think the Double-A problem is more an issue of preparation and mental approach than a lack of organic talent. Goodwin showed both his talents and his flaws in the Arizona Fall League, hitting .238/.340/.475 with 12 walks and 25 strikeouts in 80 at-bats. Overall, I like Goodwin quite a bit. He needs another year in the minors, but his upside as a multi-tooled, Seven Skill player is high enough to merit a Grade B+.

Hitting for average, hitting for power, strike zone judgment, offensive speed, defensive range, defensive reliability, throwing.

Thanks.  I knew the 5 tools were hitting for average, hitting for power, speed, defense, and throwing.  Didn't know about about the other two.

From ESPN 100 Top Prospects:

Goodwin was a potential first-rounder out of high school, went to UNC, played like a future top-10 pick, was suspended for his sophomore year, and transferred to Miami-Dade Junior College where he played just poorly enough to slide to Washington in the sandwich round -- much to the Nats' joy, I imagine, given how he's turned out.

He has recovered from the one-year aberration, showing the plus-plus speed, quick bat, and surprising power that he displayed in his one year at Chapel Hill. Goodwin isn't big but generates that power mostly with bat speed, getting enough rotation to put some loft into his swing, although it might translate more as doubles/triples power in the majors. He's a 65 to 70 runner (on the 20-80 scouting scale) whose speed translate more in the field or underway than home to first, with plenty of arm for center.

The concern with Goodwin is the hit tool, specifically related to making contact, as his swing can get long and his recognition of off-speed isn't great; he punched out in nearly a third of his Double-A at-bats (after a two-level jump) and did the same in the Arizona Fall League. There's some Mike Cameron potential here, with defense, speed, and OBP, but with more doubles and fewer homers.

nice article by Lorb (can't believe i just posted that):

I hope he had a good spring, but like so many others, his path to the majors is blocked for a while.

With all the prospect thread bumps,  I'm surprised Goodwin hasn't gotten one, .254/.338/.437 in AA

Ken (Raleigh, NC): Has Brian Goodwin progressed or has he regressed? I haven't heard much of him this season.

Matt Eddy: Looks like he's feeling the Nationals' general first-half malaise. Harrisburg CF Brian Goodwin is still trying to catch up to the speed of the game at Double-A, what with a .255/.356/.386 batting line, 13-for-21 showing in SB and 77 strikeouts in 68 games.

At least he's still getting on base... Any word on how he looks defensively?

GW HR by Goodwin in the 8th inning tonight. Went 2/4 with a Single, HR, RBI, Run, Walk. Has 2 or more hits in 5 straight games.

With that OBP and strikeout total, he must be a very patient hitter.

Pencil him in for Bernie's role next year, starter in 2016 ( I think span is locked in until then)

Span has one more year guaranteed and a fairly cheap option for 2015 ($9MM cluboption with $500K buyout).

Honestly, if he hits next season like he is right now, I'd rather just buy out. If Goodwin is ready, play him. If not, put Bryce in CF,  Werth in LF, and find another corner outfielder.

Span is tradeable as soon as Goodwin is ready or there is some other upgrade.  That contract is moveable now.  he's only due $7MM after this year, counting the buy out, and is due less than $3MM for the rest of this year.  Even if you think he is only an AL #9 hitter right now, he's worth that kind of money.
