Maker says Romero supplement could trigger false positiveThe maker of the dietary supplement at the heart of the J.C. Romero suspension controversy said Monday its product may have caused a false positive when Romero was tested.Proviant Technologies, which makes 6-Oxo Extreme, said in a statement: "While advances in analytical testing and sensitivity in detection of metabolites have made drug testers more proficient at catching cheaters, the unintended consequence is that a perfectly legal and untainted substance can cause a positive test for a banned or illegal substance."Although little information has been released about the specifics of the alleged positive test, our preliminary investigation of these allegations has uncovered information showing that the main active ingredient in our product will trigger a false positive for androstenedione."MLB, in a statement, responsed: "We stand by our drug testing program and its results."Major League Baseball suspended Romero for the first 50 games of the Phils' 2009 season for testing positive for what the Philadelphia Inquirer says was androstenedione. Romero maintains he was unaware the supplement could trigger a positive test.
