Cubs Agree To Deal With Theo Epstein
By Ben Nicholson-Smith [October 12 at 10:00am CST]

10:00am: The Cubs' overall payout to Epstein will be closer to $20MM than $15MM, because they're responsible for paying a $3.5MM conclusion bonus that he had negotiated into his contract with the Red Sox, according to ESPN.com's Buster Olney. MLB has monitored the Cubs' negotiations with Epstein, since there's concern that his deal will change the market for general managers. Epstein's salary will be similar to the one the Red Sox paid him, Olney notes (on Twitter). He was the Cubs' first choice and has met with them twice.

8:13am: Theo Epstein has agreed on a five-year deal worth more than $15MM with the Cubs, according to WEEI's John Dennis. The deal could be finalized this week, once the teams work out compensation and the Cubs decide on a title for the longtime Red Sox GM.

No need to start another thread so I thought we could discuss it here. Theo Epstein is about to sign with the Cubs, per ESPN.

Theo Epstein is about to sign with the Cubs, per ESPN. Decided to post this also in the Red Sox/Francona thread so move discussion there.

Just consolidating what spider said previously.  Might as well have a thread for it since people will inevitably keep creating threads if they don't see one.

Should of held out for Friedman.

Having said that, I have no doubts Epstein will turn the Cubs into a winner.

Wouldn't be shocked if he brought in Sandberg to manage, either.

Interesting you mention Sandberg, because he is supposed to be high on Boston's list.  Valentine has taken himself out. he was common speculation.  Hard to see a more popular choice than Sandberg in Chicago, but would Theo want someone who would be a rival for power in the organization?  Just a guess - it'll be DeMarlo Hale, unless the Astros can Mills.

The Trib story suggests that as well.    JCA, I think Theo is probably pretty confident about his position in relation to any manager.   Theo has jewelry.

He also has $15M of the owners money. I think Ryno would be a no-brainer. The "fans" would love it and buy Theo a couple of years to blow up the team and start from scratch.

So you sayin' Theo has gravitas?   :)    I don't think the manager would give Theo time.    Theo brings his own credibility that the fans would give him.   Unless of course, you're referring to MDS.

If the Cubs bring in Ryno I'm going to have to convince MrsMorse to move to the City of Broad Shoulders so we can prepare for the might Cubs to take over the NL Central.

Oh Knorr, like you don't laugh at me endlessly now.  What can I say, I'm trying to buy into being in a monogamous baseball relationship with the Nasty Nats but the Marlins and Cubs just keep pulling me back into their abyss.

Don't worry, it'll pass.   I was starting my Bucco's swoon before the All Star break.

The Nationals offer them all their fans (with split loyalty) back full time.

Marlins and Cubs, eh?  I'm surprised your cognitive dissonance didn't land you in a looney bin after the '03 NLCS.

JCA can speak more to this, but I think Theo leaving had lot more to with things outside of the team than the September meltdown.

Who's to say it didn't.  :P  All kidding aside, I knew the Cubs would freak it up somehow, if not in NLCS then in the WS.  I figured they'd probably battle it to a game seven and then totally meltdown due to Dusty Baker's incompetence.
