Latos had shoulder problems this season. Massive red flag. San Diego was smart to get maximum value before he blows his arm out. And, somehow, all of the guys San Diego got have cool sounding names. There is no way that a guy named Boxberger isn't going to be an epic closer.

I talked to a diehard Reds fan last night, he's aghast at what they gave up, and now they'll have to sign Votto since Alonso is no longer the 1B of the future (I wonder if they could have gotten someone like Cain or even Lincecum for Votto).  Terrible deal for Cincy.

In other news, Jason Kubel to the D-Backs - 2/$15.

Gerardo Parra would be excellent here.  He could definitely hit leadoff.

I think the Braves trying to trade Jurrjens falls in the same category as Latos.  They'd be smart to trade him before he has any signs of arm or shoulder problems.

Endy Chavez to the O's.

The Orioles have agreed to terms, pending physical, with veteran outfielder Endy Chavez, according to an industry source.

Chavez's 1-year deal is worth $1.5 million, with an additional $500,000 in incentives. He fits what the Orioles have been looking for: a left-handed hitter who can play left field and backup in center and right.

Chavez, 33, has played 10 seasons in the majors, including 83 games last season with the Texas Rangers. In 2011, Chavez hit .301 with a .323 on-base percentage, five homers and 10 steals in 256 at-bats. Known for his good speed and defensive prowess, Chavez also played in 30 games with Triple-A Round Rock last year
I like this move.  he's better than Bernie, but maybe we stay with Berrnie due to there not being that great of a difference going forward and due to Bernie being under team control for the near future.

Except of course that Chavez can field and somewhat hit. Neither of which Bernadina has shown the ability to do. :(

When Endy Chavez has a .320-ish OBP he can "somewhat hit"

When Cristian Guzman has a .320-ish OBP, he's the worst hitter ever

:lmao: :poke: :stir:

That's because I hate Guzman. I can use any argument I want against him.

At the end of his first contract (5 -6  years), he'll be younger than CJ Wilson is today.

Oh, Dayton. Of all of the utility men you could have gotten, you chose Yuni Betancourt. This is why, despite your epic farm system and hot shot young major league guys, people have their doubts about whether the Royals will ever go anywhere.

Why couldn't they have gotten Ryan Theriot? He would have made much more sense.

O's turned down Jurrjens, Prado and a prospect for Adam Jones.

Don't think the Nats have much that could match that package.

I saw this too.  I think the O's would want prospects rather than ML players for Jones.  Also, why do the Braves want Jones?  His bat isn't that great for a corner OF and they already have Bourn in CF.  Bourn has one year left and Jones has 2 years so not a huge difference there for them to give up a couple of solid pieces in Jurrjens and Prado.

You are considering that the O's are a rationally managed franchise.  Nothing could be further from the truth, however.  They cling desperately to the hope of winning 70 games next season, future beyond 2012 be damned.

I think they're actually headed in the right direction.

One time I was talking to one of their scouts... who I have to imagine had his job axed when Duquette dropped scouting in favor of video tape and stats... and he said (remember this was under the previous regime) that they didn't believe in advanced stats and that they thought it would eventually blow over. They were a messed up organization.

I can't imagine Duquette could actually do anything to screw them up worse.

duke did a pretty decent job when he was in montreal.  he built the '94 team.  He also made some nice moves with the Sox.  He'll always be blasted for his personality, the "roger clemens is in the twilight of his career" stuff after 1996, and a few awful signings (jose offerman, john valentin, the 2002 team), but Pedro, Manny, Damon, Wakefield, Varitek, and Lowe were his boys on the '03 - '04 teams.  I think he's sharp enough to improve the Os, but I thought MacPhail was as well.

The way money gets thrown around in the AL east, with Tampa's relentless competency, and with AA supposedly being the new best GM in toronto, I think it will take a minor miracle for the Os to be competitive

St. Louis might actually be the favorites to win that crappy division despite losing Albert.

That's going to be the oldest outfield I can remember.  Is Berkman moving back to 1st or do they plan to move Craig there?
