I also dig the alternate jersey. Goes with the Washington Red theme:

No, I consider it a matter of money.  As in Football makes plenty, so they don't have to do stuff like that.  MLB is even more profitable, if I recall.  At least in a relative sense.  They're also heavily steeped in tradition, as are their fans.  Hell even basketball doesn't offend the eyes like this, and last I checked most people considered the NBA a third-rate league.

Im pretty sure the european teams make assloads of money. if they don't it is because they don't care about money when they spend a hundred million dollars on a player. And they have sponsors on their jerseys and probably as much tradition as baseball.

I hear some sort of team up in Philly got BIMBO to sponsor and they had it put on their jerseys. Soccer fans know BIMBO has been sponsoring teams for years, but of course, Philly USA has raised a stink about it citing it offensive. Wish I could find that article again.

As for advertising on jerseys and such, I don't mind it as much because honestly I'm not paying attention to what is on some guy's shirt while the game is on. I really don't notice it anymore and sometimes almost prefer the ads because they've become ingrained in the soccer culture. I don't think ads should be added to the NFL, MLB, NHL, etc. because the culture of those leagues never needed them. However, I think Americans can be accepting of it because they already do to an extent. NASCAR's culture is completely based on ads. You can't go down the street, to school or wherever and not see someone sporting an ADIDAS, NIKE, FUBU, etc. shirt and gear like a walking billboard.

They have been kit sponsors for one of Mexico's biggest clubs (Chivas) and I think they sponsor some others down there as well.

Bimbo is one of the world's largest bread companies; in addition to their Mexican business they now own some popular American brands such as Arnold and Oroweat.

Maybe when I was a teen and saw it for the first time I snickered, but now I see that logo and I don't even think about it.

So it was the MLS Philly Union who got the sponsorship and here is the article. Not surprisingly, the whole "is this sexist" debate rooted from an ESPN article:

United's Brettschneider (rookie?) is pretty solid. Just got his 4th goal of the preseason off a nice free kick by Quaranta.

Winning decisively with the oldest player in the league in goal was pretty neat.

Surprised Onstad's older than Keller, but he's close to 2 years older (1/68 v. 11/69).

Davies emotional post-game interview:

Great start of the season for him and the team. Wolff's goal celebration was pretty epic too.

Two great RFK friendlies this year.

That Real Madrid game at FedUp Field couple of years ago was a pain in the ass.

Good sports day...Nats at 4:00 on TV, then DC United/Houston live at RFK at 6:00, then back to TV for the USA/Mex in the Gold Cup final at 9:00 (why they are holding that in the Rose Bowl I really can't understand, since the US and Mexico are generally the matchup and Pasadena might as well be Mexico City when it comes to soccer loyalties).

Hopefully Adu gets more PT tonight. He really impressed me in that game against Panama.

Maybe he's FINALLY getting his groove.  Maybe going pro at 15 isn't all that beneficial in the long run.

DC got Dwayne De Rosario?  Great trade, IMO.

Front 5 of Pontius, De Rosario, Najar, Davies and Wolff/Brettschneider is very nice.

I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw that.  That's a blockbuster move for MLS...I wonder why NYRB went for it.

I heard it's because they needed to free up a foreign player spot for one of the Premier League players they're going after. Maybe Viera or Anelka.
