Follow the Prospects: "Solid" Sammy Solis, LHP
« Topic Start: April 25, 2011, 10:29:41 PM »
Sammy Solis - LHP
Born: 8/10/88 (Litchfield Park, AZ)
Acquired (from): 2010 2d Round June Draft (University of San Diego) (51st pick)
6'5", 230 Lbs.

Prospect rankings 2011:
All minors - unranked
Nats System - Fangraphs (Hulett) #5; Baseball America - #6; NatsProspects.com - ; Minor League Ball (Sickels) - #4 (B); BP (Goldstein) does not discuss players with minimal minors experience; Hardball Times - no mention

To borrow liberally from Mark Hulett:
Quote
Solis looks like a big, strong innings-eater at 6’5” 230 lbs. There are some health concerns with the southpaw, though, as he’s struggled with back problems. His repertoire is average and his heater sits 88-92 mph. Solis also flashes a plus changeup and good curveball. He’s a strike thrower and could move quickly through the lower levels of the minors. Solis pitches with a low-three-quarter or side-arm delivery. He has a nice, smooth arm action with little effort. He pitched just four regular season innings after signing his first pro contract but he could start out the season in high-A ball.
Projects peak WAR 3.5.

Sickels's comment "Probably won't need much minor league time."

BA notes that Solis, Cole, and Robbie Ray all received above slot money.

Pitched in the Arizona Fall League, where MLB.com had him as the #13 prospect in the league.  He started and won the championship game.

Assigned to ???? for 2011 (not yet assigned, in extended spring training due to back issues, as Linty point out)Potomac for 2011. update 7/5 - promoted to Potomac on 7/4; 1st start 7/5.

Edit - Here is a link to some predraft video (http://mlb.mlb.com/video/play.jsp?content_id=7189149).  His delivery does look a bit below 3/4.  There is also mention of his herniated disk surgery that cost him his sophomore season in college.

He's hurt right now. That's why he hasn't been assigned to any of the ball clubs.

Maybe I don't remember this perfectly, but I don't recall Solis pitching with a 'low 3/4 or sidearm delivery' in AFL.  Is that right?

This has some college video where he does look below 3/4.

I'll look for some AFL video and add it to the first post if I can find some perhaps from the championship game.

I created Solis on MLB 10 The Show but wasn't sure about his delivery. Who's delivery does Solis' most resemble? Great write ups guys. Will help with my MLB Franchise lol! Any news on his injury by the way?

i watched him in the AFL, he seemed to have a very easy delivery, almost Livan-like (but with heat).  I'm really looking forward to seeing what he can do.

Right now he's on Potomac's 7-day DL.

Haven't heard when he'll be activated.

Not sure why he was put in Hagerstown to start, anyways.

He's advanced enough in his pitching ability to have started the season in Potomac.

Solis fastball at 94 according to Suns broadcaster. Also throwing a knuckle curve at 78.

94? That's a new wrinkle.

Probably at Hagerstown for a rehab like stint. Get a couple starts to get back into the swings of things, then head out to Potomac.

Must be nice to able to catch a Suns game. Obviously Harper is there, but there are 3 legit starters on the staff at the moment that could have a future in Washington.

Byron Kerr reports solis hit 95mph on the gun .. Very impressive . I remember scouting reports on him that he sat at 90-92 during college years... He sat at 92-95 yesterday.
