Nugget from new basic agreement: No new players will be allowed to use low density maple bats during length of contract.

oh man, how many games are going to be stopped for bat challenges now?

In theory couldn't we just purposefully not sign anyone after round 30 and use all that money on draftees we actually care about.

i wonder if they'll be any impact on independent league teams, all those 30 somethings just got a lot more attractive.

Starting in 2016, teams from the top 15 markets no longer will receive revenue sharing. Today, would affect Washington, Toronto and Houston.

Kind of a dick move.  Toronto might have a large market, but they just don't have a corresponding fanbase due to Canadian baseball disenchantment.

Would it be allowed to sign the player to a slot level bonus with an unnofficial agreement between the draftee and the club to re structure the players deal after he is initially signed?  Bud selig would be furious but would that be possible?

I would think that would be absolutely barred

This whole agreement seems like screw the new guy- different equipment based on seniority, really?! Maybe next time around you'll be allowed to use aluminum with ten years service time

Is there any part of this CBA that DOESN'T screw the Nats?  JTFC.

Zuck speculates that the increase of super-2 eligible players from 17% to 22% would delay Harper's call-up.

There's not a lot of bonus money spent after the first 30 rounds. Heck, it's unusual for someone in the 20s to get big money. To be sure, it does happen. But most of the money is spent early. I'd bet 95% of the money is spent on the first 10 rounds.

Then Zuck needs to read Harper's contract.

After sleeping on it for one night, I think we're actually better off than most other teams other than the really big spending teams.  Our last few drafts have stocked the farm system a bit and we have some good young (ie cheap and controllable) talent on the ML roster.

It sucks that going forward, we can't continue to bring in more talent through the draft, but at least we took advantage of the system that was in place.  Other teams didn't even do that much and now that window has closed.

This might even hurt a team like the Phillies since they're already an old and expensive team and probably can't maintain a level of spending like the Yankees and Red Sox .  The Phils farm system isn't that great, either.

The big name international players probably won't get the $1 mil+ bonsuses anymore with the cap on international spending.  It makes a lot more sense to divide up your allotment among ten or fifteen players rather than all on one player.

Good international scouting will probably be as necessary as before if not more so.

Rounds 11-50 don't count towards the cap providing the players sign for $100K or less.

John Perotto of Baseball Prospectus comments on aspects of the CBA.  I think this article is available to the non-member general public, let me know if this is not the case.

For example:

Starting in 2012, Type A and Type B free agents and the use of the Elias ranking system will be eliminated.

Getting rid of the archaic system is a great victory for everyone, whether you're a sabermetrician or a casual fan.

Couldn't we draft 1 or 2 studs and then draft some cheaper college guys a la storen so that we still get some great talent.

sure, but you're not looking at a draft like this year's in that scenario

Actually, that's pretty much what we did this year -- spent the vast majority of our money in the first few rounds.

But, you have to have enough money to lure those players away from college, not sure if the cap will allow that.

We could also draft several guys after round ten and give them all $100k bonuses.  It would be like having 20 3rd and 4th round picks.

Potential draftees should bypass the draft and go to an independant league for a year before signing with a team as a free agent. I bet boras will try that

wouldn't work - another team would just draft them the next year

You can be drafted out of the independent League?  Is that what Aaron Crow did?
