mak - the articles I saw mentioned a shoulder injury in 2010.  was he also hurt in 2011, or do you mean first year of full season ball following the surgery?  It's almost like Strasburg in terms of age and stage of recovery, with a partial season following the injury than a monitored first year back of full season ball.

Im fine minitoring innings as he comes back from surgery 2 years ago. But, he should still accumulate experience at the appropriate level. Hes been dealing at the lower levels. You simply cant ignore the age. He should be on a bit of a faster track that the rest. Time to challenge him more. See just what we have in him.

I'm starting to sway towards the "move Karns to AA" camp.

Love to see the results he's producing in A ball.

Agreed.

Then he'd be eligible for the AFL and perhaps we could use the exemption on a guy like Meyer?

This sounds like a first week of August move. Anyone recall the deadline for being in AA to be eligible for the AFL?

guarantee you if one of the reporters ask tracy/werth about him, they'll go nuts.  i've talked to some people who have seen him pitch and say he's not a fluke.

then they need to promote him.  why do we promote a guy who had only 50 something games in low a all the way up to double a but they can't promote a 24 year old who's dominating up one level?

He looked good at Potomac tonight. 6 no hit innings, 2 Ks, lots of weak contact.

Made Kevin Goldstein's Monday Morning Ten Pack:

If it wasn't for Dan Straily, Karns would be the biggest surprise pitcher in the game. A 12th-round pick in 2009, Karns didn't make his professional debut until last season due to shoulder surgery, but he's been among the most dominant pitchers in the minors this year. With six no-hit innings on Saturday, Karns now has a 1.95 ERA  over 97 innings split between Low- and High-A. His peripherals are even better, as he's allowed just 49 hits while striking out 122. His stuff has impressed as well, with a 91-96-mph fastball and nasty power breaker. At 24, he's behind the curve developmentally because of his delayed start, but when the scouting reports support the numbers, you don't worry so much about the past.

I wouldn't count on him going to the AFL. Too big of an innings jump for a guy coming back from shoulder surgery.

He'll probably be shut down pretty soon. Seeing as he's coming off injury and pitching in his first full pro season.

Karns won Pitcher of the Week for the Carolina League.

Quote
For Karns, 24, this is the second time this season that he has earned the award for Pitcher of the Week. He shut down the Lynchburg Hillcats last Monday firing six scoreless innings yielding only a single and two walks for the win. Karns' second start of the week was even better as he threw six hitless innings on Saturday against the Myrtle Beach Pelicans with the only runner reaching base on an error. In that game, Potomac was two outs shy of throwing a no-hitter. For his two starts, Karns was 2-0 tossing 12 scoreless innings surrendering only one hit and striking out eight batters.

In his first full season of professional baseball, Karns is locking down the Carolina League. His 1.88 ERA and 0.82 WHIP would be tops in the league if he had the necessary amount of innings to qualify. Karns is 6-0 in his last seven starts and has not lost a decision since June 9th.
