I'm not worried about it. This isn't the 2002 offensive environment. If you can OPS .825-.850, you can contribute at 1B if you defend well. Rendon or Zimmerman at 1B isn't going to kill the club offensively.

People count LaRoche as a huge contributor last season, and in 2002 his ~.850 OPS would have been middle of the road at 1B, at best.

the bat is still more valuable at third- last year, you had 14 first basemen with an OPS at or above .800, only 7 third basemen were over .800 (and one- Cabrera is really a first baseman). A trade would seem like the best route to maximize his value if he can't play MI

At the time Espinosa tore his rotator cuff, he was around .258/.323/.423 and was on pace for 60 extra base hits and 20 home runs to go with gold glove defense.

From tearing his rotator cuff to the end of the season, he hit .181/.261/.277.

Also, the only reason Espinosa would be worried about his long-term security is if he had as stunted a view of his own skills as some people on this board. The guy is going to make a ton of money in his career (either here or elsewhere), and probably play for 10 years.

Okay, I'll be a little more precise, oh ye of little faith. According to the Washington Times article after his cortisone shot last season, he injured the shoulder on September 8th diving for a ball against the Marlins. On that date he was hitting .258/.324/.420.

For that point on he hit .171/.247/.271.

So you can pick and choose your cut-off dates if you want, but I don't really think it's fair to include 8 early September games in his "post-injury" stats when (a) he wasn't injured yet, and (b) he OPSed 1.141 in those 8 games.

So it's probably conceivable that without the shoulder injury, his final stats would have been better than they were on September 8th.

Thats nice, but rotator cuffs to just tear from diving for a ball. There was damage prior to it. And more importantly, this team was in the playoffs and allowed Espinosa to play without getting proper medical procedure done to confirm his shoulder? Thats freaking bullcrap.

Nats sign former pitcher Micah Owings to a minor league deal.  He's listed as a 1B, has a career .813 OPS.  He's demonstrated that he can hit at the big league level, it will be interesting to see where this goes.  He's only 30.

I'm really intrigued by Owings. Of course we have Tyler Moore at 1B as a replacement player, but I think Owings could at worst be a power bench player, and maybe at best be someone who breaks out late in his career with plus .800 OPS numbers.

I played youth baseball vs Marrero and I totally forgot we had him. Probably says alot.
