stay classy philly. Also nice of the NCAA to bar kids (outside of Ohio- maybe) from having someone competent to negotiate on their behalf
Hopefully they will lose a lot of signings over this. Not cool.

The #Braves keep spending, and lock up shortstop Andrelton Simmons to a seven-year contract.

Seems to me that there must be more to this story about why Philly turned on these guys, but in any case hopefully the fall out will last for years.

Quote
“As of today, the Phillies are out,” one agent who advises numerous high-profile prospects said Thursday. “If the Phillies call for an in-home visit, the Phillies are not getting into any more of our households. We’re going to shut down all communication with the Phillies—no questionnaires returned, no communication with the Phillies’ scouts about when players are going to pitch and no communication about signability information. You can’t have this adversarial relationship between teams and players, and then have them be able to hold that over the players: ‘You’d better take this deal or I’m going to turn you in.’”

58m for 7 years for a gold glove 24yo shortstop. That is cheap. Kudos to the braves management.

The Baltimore Orioles have agreed to a one-year, $8 million contract with free agent slugger Nelson Cruz, ESPN and multiple media outlets are reporting.

Hell, we should have signed him for that.  The Lerners have that much under one seat cushion in their tertiary mansion.

Who wants to bet he fires his agent?

I wouldn't have given up a first round pick for one year of a guy coming off a PED suspension who would have had to learn a new position on the fly for us.

That's another thing that should be changed with the draft pick compensation rule.  The team that lost a free agent shouldn't get a #1 pick if the player signs for less than the qualifying offer (1 year, $14m).

birds fans are really going to love this signing.   :hysterical: :hysterical: :hysterical: :hysterical: :hysterical: :hysterical: :hysterical: :hysterical:

Nelson Cruz of the Rangers recently came off a suspension for Peds.   I dont think a cheater should be allowed on a Postseason roster.

Guess Cheaters prosper in baseball!

But it's par for the course for them. The list of juicers that have played for the birds is long so they don't seem to mind it.

Agreed. Their MLB.com depth chart had them playing Nolan Reimold in LF and DH simultaneously.

I feel like Reimold had gone through 6-7 neck surgeries by this point.  How does he keep coming back?

Baltimore refuses to give up on him for some reason?

he has less than 5 years service time and only making a bit over $1MM.  The two seasons he's been healthy enough to get over 150 PAs, 2009 and 2011, he's had wOBAs over .340.

The Angels renew Mike Trout's contract at $1 million for the year, he was slated to make $490k so this is essentially a gift as they were under no obligation to pay him anything further.  However, it helps them set the stage for a long-term deal starting in 2015 (so no luxury tax hit this year).

Top prospect 3B Miguel Sano (Twins) to undergo Tommy John. Tough break.

The O's may be close to signing Johan Santana to minor league deal.

You know, before he was a starter, Johan was a heck of a reliever for the Twinkies.  I don't know which is more stressful for him at this stage, but if they could get a couple good innings from him every 3 or 4 days, that might be a good thing.

Four years, $48 million from Baltimore for Ubaldo. Risky, but if he plays like he did last year, it is a fair contract.

Fair? He struggled in his first 3 starts and turned it around after - but that was due to Mickey Callaway.  Horrible move for B'more.  AJ Burnett also struggles in the AL.

I was glad to see those two signings.

Also happy with the Indians move to sign Murphy for the OF.

He's old, but he signed with the Philadelphia Phillies, not the Athletics. ;)

TJ for Luke Hochevar, Royals season is already over.

easy prediction: James Shields is traded this season.

considering the rest of the rotation, that's one win they probably can't afford to loose

Hearing Orel Hershiser do Dodgers games is so....off putting.  All the "we"s and "our"s puts FP Santangelo to shame.
