US may review visas of doping suspects

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic - The U.S. government could review visa applications of baseball players suspected of doping, a spokesman for the U.S. embassy in the Dominican Republic said Wednesday.

"As long as there's real concern, we want to see where any ongoing process is heading before we make a decision," embassy spokesman David Searby said. "You don't need to necessarily have a conviction."

Among the triggers for a visa review could be an active investigation, Searby said, adding that officials are relying on "partners who bring forward information on these issues."

Players who are not U.S. citizens need work visas before they can arrive for spring training. Officials would not disclose the names of any players whose visas are under review, saying only that at least four minor leaguers are currently going through the review process.

It was not clear whether those already granted resident alien status or green cards, such as Houston Astros shortstop Miguel Tejada, would also be under review.

Tejada was named in the Mitchell Report on doping in baseball. In January, Congress asked the Justice Department to investigate whether he made false statements to House committee staff when he was interviewed in connection with the Rafael Palmeiro perjury case in 2005. The FBI opened a preliminary investigation.
