kudos to Ben for linking to Linty.

Very much so.

He's the only news outlet to actually link to my blog with the tweets.

I really appreciate it.

an argument for signing Purke, even if we have to overspend:

http://fanspeak.com/washingtonnationals/2011/06/10/why-the-nationals-need-to-go-all-in-to-sign/

I'm not sure I agree, the argument is basically "because we wasted millions on guys like CMW we should spend millions on Purke because if he overcomes his injuries, he's a front of the rotation guy.

If Purke doesn't sign, is this draft a failure? (obviously too early to really tell, my point is immediately afterwards)

It makes a lot of the guys drafted behind him look suspect if they don't sign him.

No need to free up money, otherwise.

suppose he hold firm to his $7 million number confident he can go back to school and prove himself, should the team pony it up? If they offer $4 million and he says no, I can't blame them, and the gamble that he'll take it seems worth it.

the Padres have signed 19 picks already per a post on MLBTR.  Have we signed anyone yet?

This draft is pretty crappy if we don't sign Purke.

Last year we drafted plenty of exciting guys like AJ Cole, Robbie Ray, etc.

This year..... Not really. Strong at the top but the rest is pretty bleh.

Getting Rendon, Meyer and Goodwin makes it hard for me to see this draft as a failure no matter what. However, signing Purke is the difference between a good draft and a ridiculous draft.

IMO, signing 3/4 makes this draft a success. Any less than that, though, and I won't be happy. They got a haul, but if they can't come through they wasted letting Dunn go- a compensation pick just isn't as good, you have no leverage.
That said, I'm confident they'll sign the first three at least- Purke is defintely the wildcard. Personally, I support shelling out the money for Purke- it won't impact the owner's wallet, and it's worth the risk as much as anyone else.

I can't imagine a scenario where Rendon, Meyer and Goodwin don't sign. They will all sign. They are all Boras guys, so they might all go to the deadline, but they will all sign.

I think overall Meyer is a better prospect than Purke at this point.  Getting Rendon, Meyer, Purke, and Goodwin signed is ideal in any case.  The rest is extra.

Gotta see Purke in summer ball (Cape Cod). Other than that I agree with MorseMythology.

Apparently Brian Dupra, Caleb Ramsey, and Alex Kreis (7, 11, 35) have all signed. This per NFA Brian on Twitter.

So on Sickel's site - minorleagueball.com - someone threw out a Steve Garvey comparison for Rendon.  Garvey - http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/g/garvest01.shtml

Multiple all star games and gold gloves, one MVP.  .300 average and 20-25 home runs every year.  He may have been about Rendon's size, too.  And I think Rendon could take a lot more walks than Garvey did.

He was before my time but that looks like a decent comp.

Five consecutive seasons of 162 games or more with an average of well over .300? Wow, now I'm embarrassed that my first thought was "not Marcus Garvey?"

Yeah I wasn't familiar with him, either.  I was worried about Rendon being smallish for 1B and not having a ton of power but if he ends up being similar to Garvey, we'll have done really really well.
