That's easy to say in hind sight, but I don't think anyone saw what they did coming.  You couldn't have predicted they would be the best team in baseball coming out of spring training.

Most of the studies show that guys start to lose steam at about 160-170 innings following the comeback from Tommy John surgery.  There's is no reason the Nats should not have prepared for that scenario - unless of course they punted the 2012 season before it ever started.  In which case, if you're conceding the season anyway, why not just hold Strasburg back?

Yeah, I am still ok with it given he medical advice availability and doing the right thing by the player and the long term franchise. Also, saw him fading down the stretch anyway.

Also, given that there are no such things and jinxes, baseball gods, curses, etc. none of that talk is worth considering. Winning it all takes a lot of things to go right. I didn't think they had it in them last year anyway, but you have to decide how much risk you take on. No guarantees of winning divsions every year, but you can do things to put yourself in the position to pull it off. That's a matter of investment. Once in the playoffs, it comes down to some luck and who gets hot at the right time. Last year, Detwiler was the pitcher that made the other starters look like bums. So you never know.

As evidenced by Gio's inexplicable loss of control.  The team had no moxie last year outside of Werth and Harper.

hrm maybe I shouldn't have bumped.  Same old arguments so far.

Maybe it's a bit too early, but I don't think it's a stretch to reconsider opinions on this matter given the start we have.  Reconsider <> rehash even if your opinion hasn't changed tho.

Because I think they thought they were going to be in a dog fight, not a run away and their fast start was pretty important to their success last year.

I thought many of you were ok with the shutdown b/c we were guaranteed NL East titles for the next 5 years+.  Now that we are realizing just how difficult having a winning record can be, I'm curious if opinions have changed on the shutdown.

Not a bit.  He was rapidly losing effectiveness anyway.  We didn't lose the NLDS because of Strasburg.  This year's struggles have nothing to do whatsoever with shutting him down last year.  There is no such thing as "karma", and if there was, good things would happen to us this year for having the courage to do the right thing for the player last year.

Trying to tie the decision last year to the struggles this year is moronic.

So...

Strasburg could have skipped regular spring training, started up with extended spring training in April and early May, then is ready for September and October.

And we wouldn't have made the playoffs because we didn't have enough Stras during the regular season?

Then we'll differ.  I think they started Strasburg right away because they never had an intention of competing last year and they just wanted to get the first season post-surgery out of the way.

It's al good though - we'll just have to agree on the fact that UNO sucks.  ;)

I'm not sure I agree - Stras still pitches the same 140+ innings in the regular season and you take your shot with your best pitcher in the playoffs.

I don't think anyone's doing that.  We're just wishing that given this year's struggles we would have liked to see management give more thought to trying to win it all last year.

But we are still whining.

I was all for the shutdown last year but I was wrong. He's already damaged good and we blew our one chance at doing anything with this group.

Kilgore now saying it's not an arm injury but a muscular issue in his back.  Somewhat relieving if true.

Mike Rizzo thinking he can outsmart the baseball gods by shutting down Jesus is what led to this dismal performance so far this year. B

No, it looks the same.  A prudent long term choice.
