MDS - brain freeze; admitted it.

Braves were another brain freeze.

Is Polanco still with the Phillies?

Zuck has a nice piece on the Nats using the opportunity to market themselves as a winning team, especially given the failures of our other sports teams:

http://www.natsinsider.com/2012/01/time-for-nats-to-market-winning.html

I absolutely loved the video package they did last year showing the guys working out in the stadium, that's the kind of thing they need to do to hammer home the idea that this is a young, up and coming, hard working team.  They also need to market the hell of out of the players.  Strasburg, Zimmerman, Storen, etc. should be on AM980, 106.7, WTOP and every local TV outlet every week in Feb. March.

Too bad this team is a freaking joke when it comes to marketing.

Cosign.  Would it really be that hard for the Nats to do some public outreach and take out some billboards around town?  I mean, am I asking for too much here?

And customer service.

You're assuming there is a feedback loop for the performance of concession employees, which there obviously isn't.

If they'd do the following... they could easily start to build a fanbase.

- Winter caravan. Pay the players some cash and let them travel around the VA/NC/MD/DC letting the fans get to know them.

- Get radio deals with all the major cities in VA/NC/MD/DC... it's your 'territory' start promoting yourself as such.

- Put up billboards in VA/NC/MD/DC... doesn't even have to be more than Strasburg with a menacing glare and a phone number
for tickets.

- Supply all the local pro sports teams with Nats swag. T-shirts, Hoodies, hats, you name it. When they're giving an interview, I don't want to see them wearing a Phillies hat... get them Nats gear.

- More videos like the 'in the game' video they did last year where it was like you were part of the team. But don't stop with one... actually expand on that. Fans want players with personalities. Vignettes are a way to do that.

- Take out a full page ad or two in non-DC papers. Have Morse, Gio, JZ, Espinosa and Ramos be the focus. Make these players recognizable.

- Switch an affiliate to either Richmond or Norfolk. You need that Virginia base much more than you do Pennsylvania or New York. Nothing against Harrisburg or Syracuse, but a Nats farm team needs to be in Richmond or Norfolk to build brand recognition.

How many billboards are there in the metro area. I don't think they are really a thing we do around here. They should have ads on sides of buses and posters in metro stations and other such things though.

There's a large one right on 395 within spitting distance of the stadium that would be perfect.

Dear Linty,

Thanks so much for your input.  You saved us $$$$ by not having to hire a consultant.  However after a thorough review of your excellent suggestions, we find them not to be cost-effective.

sincerely,

Kilgore has a must-read piece on what kind of team the Nats want to be.

----------
The Nationals have the means to build and sustain a team with Fielder, Zimmerman and their other core players, at a price tag of about $145 million in payroll per year once the 2015 season rolls around. With all the disposable income in the DMV area, a coming bump in television revenue and the Lerner’s billionaire wealth, Washington can be that kind of market.

But Nationals ownership would need to fundamentally change the way it has behaved since taking over the team. It would need to be a steward that cares primarily about its long-term investment and spends from its enormous cash reserves, packs the park with fans and hopes to break even or, maybe, turn a small profit annually as the overall value of the franchise rises. That’s a very different motivation from yearly profit sheets.

i always wondered if there's some kind of gentleman's agreement with Angelos to prevent the Nats from spending huge sums of money to build a top-notch team.  Think about what happens to Baltimore with powerhouses to their north and south.  The team will be in all sorts of trouble.

Being a conspiracy guy, I wouldn't doubt they run in the same social circles and smoke cigars on the veranda.

Of course he jests.

The real secret handshake agreement was with Selig, when he awarded the franchise to the Lerners with their pledge to hold down spending, run a low-key, frugal operation and avoid rocking the boat.

Correct, although Selig and the others owners cannot be happy that the Nats moving into a big market has had almost no effect on league controlled merchandise marketing or on national TV ratings.

Let's compare corner position offense if we had Prince:

Where will Adrian Gonzalez play if you get Fielder?
