A group of players and I are trying to start up a new team this year.  Below is what we want for uniforms.

Potentially EPIC season in 2014....

Turned my first career triple play today.  That was fun.

Just found out the league added two more former professionals:  Winston Fernandez who only played one year of minor-league ball and Brian Sweeney who pitched 117 innings in the majors!

do you get to face them?

I just "retired" from my softball league, I'm 45 and in very good shape, but the rest of the team is under 30 and I'm spending most of the recent games as the "extra hitter."  It's not really worth giving up friday evenings to bat 4-6 times and do nothing else, and I don't get paid like Big Pappi.

I've faced Fernandez and he's unbelievable.  I watched him turn what should have been a single to RF into a triple with ease.

We haven't faced Sweeney as a pitcher but he hit a bomb off of one of my pitchers.

It's pretty remarkable how talented the MLB scrubs are.

True.  Dude was a pitcher and he could play CF and hit like nobody else in our league.

I played 12" softball in the 80's with a fella that had a cup of coffee with the Mets...lefty...not sure his position.

I've never caught a ball that had been thrown any harder...

I got me a Wilson A1000 glove and I'm ready for softball season.  I have a small hardball glove but I'm scared to catch softballs.  They're too big!  So I bought a bigger glove for OF and softball.  I'll probably still wear my little Asdrubal glove if I'm in the middle infield.

Anyone else in a beer league or anything?

Merge this thread if it's redundant!

Yes, it's called Minty's Do You Still Play thread or something. I was looking for it but the ridiculous 10 second limit on searches annoyed me so I quit.

Whytev:  why not play hardball?

Also, I have an A-700 (9") infielders mitt and I have used it for softball. I mostly play 3B in softball.

By the way, my team gets the opening night game. It's an honor even though we will most likely get our asses kicked.

Let me be honest; I also coveted a new glove and it was my birthday so I asked for one. My old glove was the same one I've had since I was 12. It's downgraded to sentimental value.

As for hardball, I don't even know if there are leagues here for old dudes. This is Canada, after all. My band and friends play a hardball game against another group of friends 2-3 times a year. We're all musicians more than jocks so the skill level is varied, but we do real diamond measurements, stealing, the whole thing. It's fun as heck but I don't think there is a league like that.

Softball bats are really expensive! What a racket!

They can be. I got mine used. Still was expensive, but not as much as it would have been NIW.

The league I just signed up for insists on a stamp of certification. Makes it pricey. One year warranty on a new one though. My only comfort.

Mine does too, but those existed several years ago. You can find really good used bats that will qualify for your league.

Vancouver, right?

You can look into that.  I can't get much information out of that website, but the link said it was from ages 13-99.  There was also this page which seemed like a team locator for all of B.C. but you could probably narrow the search be closest to you and then contact a team about what league they play in:

http://www.baseball.bc.ca/page.php?pg=9

The good news is, you have a group of guys who already play together.  Maybe you could get enough of them to make a team and join a league?
