His AAA numbers last year were 9.28 K/9, 3.38 BB/9, 2.25 WHIP, 5.17 FIP. In 10.2 IP

In fairness, he allowed 4 Runs, all earned.  That is not exactly getting lit up.  Seems very questionable to not have put him on the 40 man roster.

Saul Rivera got a minor league deal with the Cleveland Indians. Can you say, "Acta"?

Bowden vs Rizzo. Does Jesse English really have more promise than Everts?

The Mariners signed catcher Josh Bard and reliever Chad Cordero to minor league deals, according to a team press release.

Bard, 32 in March, hit .230/.293/.361 in 301 plate appearances for the Nationals this year, catching 630.6 innings.  He's flashed the ability to draw a walk in years past.  Since Kenji Johjima left for Japan, the Mariners have an opportunity for a veteran catcher.

Cordero, 28 in March, is attempting to recover from July '08 labrum surgery.  He tossed 14.3 innings in the minors for the Ms this year after signing in March.

The Mariners love to snap up ex-Nats.

Chief, I fully understand why he stayed in Seattle. I am baffled as to why Nieves won out over Bard, except that Nieves in under team control through 2012.

I still remember staying up until 1:30 am to watch Ryan Langerhans hit a come-from-behind walk-off home run in something like the 15th inning in a shock Mariners victory. It was the same night Alex Rodriguez hit a walk-off in the 14th for the Yankees, and I got to watch both of them.

Yes, and Wrigley is not going to hurt him, either.  Good for Byrd.  I would have wanted him as a platoon partner for Hermida on my AL team but I never saw his name seriously in the discussion.

have you seen his home/away splits from his texas years?

he was a 4th OF before he went to texas. his "rise" is a product of playing half his games in a little league field.

That, and having a guy linked to Bonds (Andrulis?) as his personal trainer.

Looks like his SLG was helped 100 or slightly more by playing in TX the last 3 years each year, but his avg stayed constant and his OBP the past two years was within .020 points.

[quick edit - actually, his OBP home / away shows .036 gap in '08, so maybe the difference is more significant]

He's admitted to questionable supplements, right? That helps . . .
