I think, outside of a major pitching acquisition in the off-season, people will look back at this rotation and yearn for it in the coming years.

I truly believe this is the best our pitching will be in the "contending years" (barring a trade/signing for an ace)

I don't think people realize how good we have it with Jackson as a #4. Next year the staff will not be nearly as good. 30-40 more IP from Strasburg is not magically going to cover 200+ innings from Jackson plus whatever dreck we have as #5 next year. nagging about Det/CMW as #5? How's it going to look next year when they're our #4?

That's why you go for it when you have the chance. Come late September if we're in a position to win, I expect Rizzo will do what it takes to win now.

Linty, makes no sense that Rizzo would aggressively build the '12 rotation but do nothing to address '13.

Jackson is way over-performing his contract.  So unless we find another pitcher to way overperform as our 4 next year, or we lay down serious money, yes the '12 rotation will be better than the one in '13.

Attendance, and revenue are surging, even not crediting MASN change.  If he signs one EJax this year, no issue filling gaps in '13.

EJax isn't going for another one year deal next year tom.  And a multiyear deal for him would affect the ability to keep all the young stars as their initial contracts run out in a couple years.

I guess it's possible the Lerner's do pay up for Jackson and plan to keep paying up as players gain years in arbitration and reach free agency, but in that case the other favorite debate on this forum should shift from LAC vs LANC to LANC vs LATNS (Lerners are the next Steinbrenner)...

MTH, didn't mean EJax per se, but other above average talent should be available as well.

whoops, fair enough but I think it'll be hard to find someone Jackson level for next year.  That said, given this whole tangent discussion of how important Jackson is to this year's team (and he is) it is funny to  note we are 4-9 in games he starts!

Does anyone really think, after yanking him today, the Nationals are going to let Strasburg go over 160 innings?

He might get hypothermia pitching in October, not funny? Anyway he won't be pitching in October no matter what.

No kidding, old man Lerner is going to have to build a dome for this guy.

zuckerberg was asked about it again the other day on WFAN, he said that every time the topic comes up with Nats management, they throw out the name Kerry Wood.  He still doesn't think the Nats will let Strasburg pitch past 160 or so, even if it means hurting their chances in October.

That's dumb logic. He pitched 166.2 IP in his rookie year. I guess the Nationals feel that Kerry Wood would have been fine if only he pitched 6.2 IP less.

It's recovering from the surgery. They shut down Zimmermann last year. I expect they will shut Strassburg this year. I also think this team can win the pennant. Strassburg will pitch long enough to win the division, and when he's stops in early /mid-September, the team will have Detwiler as number 4 and Lannan -- that guy -- as number 5 starter. Gio + Zimmermann + Jackson + Detwiler make a good post-season rotation. Storen will return in a few weeks, so the relief pitching will be fine. Werth will be back. Then it's all down to the hitting, and luck.

DeRosa will be gone. The hitting / position questions might even be good ones: finding spots for Chad Tracy, Lombo, Moore, maybe Marrero and Bernadina. And Ankiel: is his defense enough by itself?

We are building a perennial contender here.  No reason to panic over this year.

Next year's staff will be better because of the continuing maturation of the top three starters.

And the offense will be better because of the development of Harper.

How many teams made a run then disappeared? It seems relatively common- the Yankees are always there, but in modern free agency, there aren't many other perennial contenders are there?

FWIW, Wood only threw 137 innings after coming back from TJ.  He threw 174 the following year, then got up over 200 the next two before the injury bug set in.

I don't think Clippard was talking about having Strasburg pitch past 160 innings or whatever it ends up being.  That wouldn't really fit with the context of the rest of the column.  I guess Boz could have taken Clippard totally out of context and dumped that quote in, but that doesn't seem like a Boz-like thing to do.

Olney says the Nats could think about Brandon McCarthy to fill Strasburg's spot in the rotation.

No thanks. Almost a 4 ERA away from Oakland. Giving up .294/.350/.460 when on the road. Pass. I'd rather call up Lannan.
