Costa Rican "Centanario" is mighty fine.  Someone (Spider i think) has a rum Library of Congress with some bottles of Nicaraguan stuff that came from Aztec gods' personal stash.  There is some fine rum in Central America - I have no idea why one doesn't see much of it here.

Screech from Newfoundland is another good one...a relic of the old mercantilist triangle trade.

Niece had some South African concoction at Christmas.    (Marula liquor?)   Tasted like a more tangy Bailey's.    First alcohol in 8 or so weeks so that could have affected my taste buds.

I guess if you take pretty much anything and mix it with cream, sugar, and booze, it becomes palatable  :P

True dat.    It was straight out of the bottle but still had that "umbrella" taste to it.

My youngest gave me a bottle of 80 Proof Grande Reserve Plantation Rum from Barbados for Xmas.  Not much of a rum drinker, but I'll have to try it one of these days...

Put it in a flask and bring it to the Park.   :)

Even shiyte rum in a half-gallon plastic jug is OK when one has a blender and some mangoes.

Mentioned to my wife that I was ready for some classic cocktail stuff - so of course I got quite a bit of it.  My father in law emptied out his cabinet of his old martini glasses - 2 to 4 would have been ideal but now I have 11.   :?  They are cool though, all 50's vintage.

Coolest of all however was a book he pulled off his shelf and threw in - Esquire's Handbook for Hosts.  This is a 1949 guide for Metrosexuals.      It does have lots of classic cocktail recipes of course, but great advice in many areas.  Brain teasers, dating advice ("Should you invite her in?"), card games, etc.

I think my favorite may be some of the advice on cooking outdoors for friends.   Here's one in the "yes" column:

Use DDT.  Use generously in and around the barbecue premises.  Banish all bugs and insects that creep, crawl, or fly, thus you add to the comfort of your guests and your own peace of mind. First application 1 hour before meal time-additional one just before guests arrive.

This book has been reprinted and is now available for under $5.  Well worth it, quite hilarious.

I also got a bottle of Whistlepig Rye from my wife, along with a drink shaker.   I won't be wasting the Whistlepig on a mixed drink however.

I love American rye but the Pig didn't wow me.

I tried scotch again for the first time in about 20 years and really enjoyed it (Dewars White label blended).  Does anyone have a recommendation for a good bottle from the local ABC store that won't cost me an arm and a leg?  Dewars 12 seems to get decent reviews.

That's the regular blend they serve on BA flights - not objectionable at all (in recent years they've added The Glenlivet single malt to the repertoire as well).

After not having gin for a decade, green hat on the rocks with a lime wedge is my new favorite thing

Local abc store had a poor selection of scotch, a lot of very cheap stuff and a 1/4 if the section was Johnny Walker varieties. I bought Glenlivet 12. Not as sweet as dewars white label but very smooth. I'm happy.

I like Ardbeg single malts but they are not for most people. When I like easier to drink single malt, I like Japanese stuff like Yamazaki 18 and look for special edition stuff.

If I'm ever going to shell out serious money for George, it'll be this George...

IIRC they do occasional tastings.
