Follow The Prospects: Destin Hood, OF
« Topic Start: July 02, 2009, 11:26:58 AM »
Thought it'd be nice to start a thread dedicated to this kid, as I think he's going to be very special.  Sounds very versatile, he can bat anywhere in the line-up, can hit for contact and power and is one of the last of the toolsy mold of the JimBo era (love the pick though jimmy).  So far he is on a blazing start in GCL action, I'm interested in how much he moves up this year.

What does everyone project out of Hood, when do you expect him to be MLB ready and do you think he moves up at all this season?

Hood: 6 games, .364 AVG, 1 HR, 2 2B, 8 RBI, 0 BB, 5 K, .391 OBP, .591 SLG, .982 OPS (as of July 2)

way too early, anything from never makes the majors to perpetual all star at this point

I'm personally hoping for Sizemore

Ok how does he have a higher OBP with no walks? I didn't think FCs, or reaching on an error, counted towards OBP...

QFT, GCL numbers mean next to nothing.  Hood looks like he could project into a solid MLB player one day, but he is probably 3 years away at minimum.  If he continues to mop up at GCL, they should promote him to Vermont for some of the season, just so he can start adjusting to the travel.

guys our major league team sucks balls.  i'm just trying to find something to get excited about for the future and it's an offday and it's better than talking about who is rationale in the Lerners Are Cheap talk.

what's wrong with doing projections and listing expectations?

not a thing, maybe someone closer. Its hard for me to get excited about gcl stats. It just reminds me how far away we are

again, i'm not saying stop the press and call him to the bigs now, just saying i'm looking forward to his development and since he was such a top pick, thought he deserved a watch thread.

Ramirez is playing the same position at Vermont. I wish Hood was playing center.

I think there are a lot of people out there excited about him and his potential and his numbers may be pretty much meaningless, but they are certainly very encouraging.  As far as projections at this point, he looks like a speedy LF with a decent bat that has some pop.

Regardless of how much meaning his stats have, I still wouldn't mind seeing him trash the GCL.  I believe if the Nats handle this kids development properly, he has a very good chance of becoming a good ballplayer one day.

That is a good point.  Neither of them will probably be going anywhere this season.  Even if they moved Hood to RF, that spot is taken by Higley at Vermont.

It sounds like the Nats believe Hood is a corner OF, but it also doesn't help that Eury Perez is at GCL, as he is a plus defender with a real good set of wheels.

my comment has little to do with hood. It has more to do with the fact that most of out legitimate offensive prospects are still in A ball.

sorry, I wasn't trying to direct anything at you, just simply agreeing that GCL stats have very little worth.

I think he's exciting, but merely on-track for the position he was drafted in.  Any second round pick ought to tear up the GCL in their second year.  He was a tad dissapointing last year, but has dramatically improved his batting.  Not sure how his defense has been...

Hood and the GCL Nats are destroying the GCL Astros (maybe a positive for tonight's Nats-Stros game) and Hood thus far is 1-for 2, 3b, 2 rbi, 2 bb ... his average is at .333.

not in this organization. we don't reward players who do well with timely promotions.

who else deserves to get bumped?  meyers got his promotion.  norris obviously has tons of work to do with the glove before he's going to get a bump.

Norris can work on his glovework in A+.

Sean Rooney (23) should be in AA. (.312/.373/.488). 18 Doubles, 6 HRs, 40 RBIs, 21 BBs, 29 Ks, 3 SBs, 2 CS.

Dan Leatherman (almost 24) should be in AA. 4-0, 3.46 ERA, 1 K per IP.

Marcos Frias (20) should be in A+. 5-2, 2.79 ERA, 73 Ks to 17 BBs. Only 4 HR allowed in 77.1 IP.

Justin Phillabaum (23) should be in A+. 1-2, 2.21 ERA. .228 BA Against, 37 Ks in 40.2 IP.

Osvaldo Rordriguez (25?!!) should be in A+. 2-2, 10 Saves,  3.03 ERA, 44 Ks in 32.2 IP.

Athualapa Severino (24) should be in AA. 3-0, 11 Saves, 2.54 ERA, .213 BA against.

I could go on with more and more names if you like but those are some of the first ones that come to my mind.

the thing is we don't see these guys everyday, we don't have the same experience and keen eye that the personnel in our front office/development group/etc.

obviously we've seen enough of kearns where we know he can't cut it.  but for these kids we just got by reports, box scores and from time-to-time watching them play with our own eyes.

but it seems like hood is handling rookie pitching with ease and it looks like he's ready for a bump.

Tough crowd. Destin turned 19 just 3 months ago and had all of 86 Abs last year.

Not trying to kill the mood, but it's only the GCL. How many players have tore up the GCL, and failed miserably at the next level? How many have tore up AA, and failed in the majors? He has 4 levels to go through before the majors. It remains a longshot.

I say this only because I don't want my hopes crushed. Still, I remain cautiously optimistic.

He had first round talent, but signability issues.
