Okay, I don't get this. I know his history as a player, but what's his history as a coach? We need someone with the right style.

Discuss.

He coaches his OHL team, the London Knights.

He's coached Kane, Tavares, Nash, Corey Perry...Carlson too. He actually worked in the Caps' player development department in 99-2000 (with GMGM). He has done a great job with the Knights.

Hunter is co-owner and coach of the London Knights in the Ontario Hockey League. He has been coaching them since 2001. The Knights have finished first or second in every season except for two. They won the Memorial Cup in 2005.

Hunter obviously doesn't have coaching experience at the NHL level, but I believe that he can be one hell of a motivator. At this point, would it really hurt to give him a shot?

There are some NHL egos on the team that may require someone who has coached such critters before...hungry AHL/OHL/WHL/etc youngsters generally don't have a motivation problem.  Pat Quinn could bring out the best in Pavel Bure and Igor Larionov, he could almost certainly get the sashas to give a crap.  Dale Hunter might be a great NHL coach, but that's not a roll of the dice that I would be very comfortable with under the circumstances.

I was wondering the same thing.  I think he works construction or sheet metal fabrication or something like that now, so it's not like he's been luffing off playing golf and betting on games.

Hunter is definitely a risk, could be a great move or could totally blow up in our faces.

Hunter is definitely boom or bust. With this team, I think he'll boom.

Looks like Dale Hunter is the new coach. Mike Vogel reporting that BB is out, and DH is in.

Yeah, a move had to happen. BB had clearly lost the team. I gotta admit, I'm kind of nervous about the DH hiring. Like UMD said, it could work or it could blow up in our faces. I know one thing though...this team will definitely become tougher under DH. I loved the way he played when he was a Capital. He will have his hands full with this team. The powerplay needs retooled and the defense needs some work. I think this team became lazy under BB. I can't see DH putting up with that. I can see a "you play hard or go" type mentality under him.

You can be sure Dale Hunter will bust his ass. Dream job just fell in his lap. He could be an even bigger legend than he already is if he can whip these guys into form and bring a cup to DC.

It will be interesting to see how the stars on this team react to DH. I think they've had a pretty easy ride during the BB years. I would expect more practice, which will seem like hell compared to BB's famous optional practices.

This is not what I expected to hear today

This at the very least is addition by subtraction...change was needed for change's sake.

I was surprised that it happened this quick as well. I just posted a few days ago that I thought he would last at least until the midseason point. That loss to Buffalo was ugly though, and I'm sure that was the final nail in the coffin. The buzzards really starting circling after that loss and you could tell it was just a matter of time.

Looks like the Hurricanes pulled the trigger on their coach, too. Is there some marker they use?

Kirk Muller in for the Canes as head coach. I think that's a good hire for the Canes.
