Hey guys, NFA Brian posted this in the Minor League thread:

Too bad Daryle appears to not have anything left in the tank.

Smart front offices don't rush their young players.  Nothing is lost by him spending a season or part of another season in Syracuse.

Look at all of the contending teams who would trade this or that minor leaguer.  They actually have good players in their minor league systems.  It's ok to have good players in the minors.  It also means you have to have good players on your major league roster, to keep those players down.

Clayton Kershaw is 21 and in the Big leagues with the league leading Dodgers. Tommy Hanson was sent to the big leagues at a young age. What will Zimmermann learn in AAA? Right now, he is one of the better starters in the NL. Why would he take a step backwards especially for a team that is rebuilding for the future. The O's have proven that signing mediocre veteran starters is not the smart way to rebuild which is why they ditched that plan.

Rob Dibble is also stupid. What veteran pitcher could we get for 15-20 million that is decent? Seriously, Dibble has no understanding about how the game works.

You can get a decent, non-garbage dump pitcher for a reasonable price.  You do have to spend SOME money, Lerners!

Potential.

The guy could blow his arm out tomorrow and be garbage.

Rob would rathe give the money to a player who has a track record in the pro's. I don't disagree.

Those guys who have decent track records cost a lot more money than Strasburg. Do you know what kind of veterans we could with that kind of money? Probably ones who are no better than Odalis Perez. Also, those veterans could also blow their arms out like Strasburg and in that case we are out of more money.

There's no reason we can't do both. We have the richest owners in baseball. It's time they open up their checkbook.

I agree with this. The only reason I am against a veteran is that the ownership probably won't commit the resources for other players if they signed one.

Sign one really good, top quality starting pitcher, multi-year, $12 million + per season.

Sign one less good, better than garbage dump starter.

Lannan

Olsen or Balestar

I'll give you Zimmermann.

...

That second signing is the place where one of the young pitchers in Syracuse could be called up if he bombs.
