Local DC breweries are all > Shiner Bock.

I much prefer a decent/good local brewery over a good/solid bigger operation.  There is a local brewery in Carlisle and knowing their beers are brewed on site makes me appreciate them a little more.

Now good regional brews would be Bell's and Founders.

Just wait till you visit Texas.  The parochialism is WAY over the top.

Ten years ago bars around Dallas used to serve Bud, Miller, and Shiner.  Over the last few years they have discovered the whole world of craft beers.  I suspect though that the rest of the state is slower to adapt to change.

Lone Star and Pearl also in many bars.

Mmm, Founders Backkwoods Bastard is great, though a rare, seasonal find.

I lived in Texas for 2 years, and never ceased to be amazed by the worship for Shiner beers.  For me the spell was broken the moment I tasted my first.   :spaz:

Shiner Bock sucks balls.

Houston-Nat's Texas Top Ten Beers
1. 512 Cascabel Cream Stout (Austin)
2. Rahr and Sons Bourbon Barrel Aged Winter Warmer (limited release) (Fort Worth)
3. Rahr and Sons Winter Warmer (Fort Worth)
4. Lakewood Lager (Garland)
5. 512 Pecan Porter (Austin)
6. Southern Star Buried Hatchet Stout (Conroe)
7. Live Oak Hefeweizen (Austin)
8. Peticolas Velvet Hammer (Dallas)
9. Rahr and Sons Ugly Pug Black Lager (Fort Worth) [EDIT: had the wrong beer here]
10. Lakewood Temptress Imperial Stout (Garland)

Only very limited releases are really worth having from St. Arnold's (Houston); I haven't yet sampled Jester King, Ranger Creek, or the brand-new Pedernales Brewery. Deep Ellum Brewery (Dallas) is run by hop-heads, so while I'm not especially fond, if you're a big hops fan their IPA is killer.

Of these, #4 is one of the tastiest lagers I've ever encountered, #2 ranks alongside Old Rasputin or Left Coast Voodoo Stout in my estimation, and #1 - 512 Cascabel Cream - is easily one of my five favorite beers.

Texas breweries are very heavily conspired-against by state law. There's a game afoot in the Texas legislature to lift many of the restrictions facing microbreweries, but it's the Texas legislature, so who knows if they'll do the right thing.

Make it a 2nd Amendment issue.

Tonight's drinking:

- Pedernales Hefeweizen (TX) - brand-new brewery from rural Texas, trying their stuff for the first time and enjoying it a lot.
- Peticolas Brown Ale (TX) - pretty delicious English-style ale
- Ska Ten Pin Porter (CO) - darn tasty porter in a tulip glass to round out the evening

DC's Three Stars "Two taps to the Dome" is pretty good.  The name is a little disturbing though, unless you are a USMC (ret) sociopath (ahem).

Banana Bread Beer tastes so much like banana bread, it's uncanny. I love it (but not for every mood).
