I just saw a movie called "It Happens Every Spring" with Ray Milland about a college professor who is working on a compound to keep insects away from wood. By accident a baseball is dipped in his chemical formula and he discovers that the substance is repelled by wood so he poses as a pitcher and helps St Louis win the pennant.
