I think I read that it was a shot of Bowling Green subway station in Battery Park.

It appears to be the entrance to the shops below One New York Plaza. Just north of Battery Park.

I think it's the subway station, as spidey suggests. The shops have a squarer entrance (I initially thought it was the shops, too, but this has a rounded entrance.)

Here's a shot of the subway station from Google maps.

Another reason never to live in NYC :spaz: but I hope everyone there is safe and warm.

  I don't know why that made me laugh.

Do a search on "one new York plaza" and "hurricane sandy". You'll see images that show the name above the entrance.

I already did (and linked a picture of its own flooded entrance). But the original pic doesn't match the shape of the entrance to The Plaza Shops. That subway entrance (also near Battery Park) matches perfectly.

I think if you look you'll find a photo that gives the location complete with the debris in the lower right.

I stumbled into the picture along with a full caption, but didn't know you guys were going to spend multiple pages discussing exactly where it was or I would have spared you the grief and pasted the damn thing over here.

Now I can't find it, but pretty sure it was the subway entrance.

My aunts' neighborhood looks like a war zone. Damn.

(Image removed from quote.)

Someone on the UVA forum who grew up going to the beach in the same neighborhood posted an overhead picture of the damage. Just devastating. My aunt's house is out of the picture off the bottom, so maybe she was very lucky, but this just boggles my mind to see this sort of damage. I have a lot of very fond childhood memories of going to the beach at Breezy Point:

HUGE picture, not mobile-phone friendly.

What a crazy few days.  A friend and I drove out to Tulsa late last week and changed our plans to get back before the storm (my vehicle got left at a repair shop in Frostburg, MD).  We rushed back and made it through Garrett County yesterday afternoon as it started snowing hard and they ended up closing I-68 shortly after we got across.  Stayed with friends in Frostburg last night - can't believe the power never went out as their house is over 100 years old and the wind was howling all night long.  Got about 2 inches of snow there, but over 2 feet just to the west.

Hope everyone's okay, especially welch and any other New Yorkers on the board.

I think so too.  I was just there last month and I believe I went into that very subway entrance.

EDIT: I couldn't figure out how to copy the image and description directly from the site.  It may be that the subway is accessible from the shops ala Crystal City, but that isn't mentioned.

That picture would be perfect if Cuomo and Bloomberg were trapped in a Smartcar at the bottom of the steps.

I've never seen two people in one of those. Always it's one guy, who buys tofu and not deodorant.

If you fold them in half they'd fit with room to spare.

This is what is confusing. Why would they call have a sign that says "The Plaza Shops".

This is clearly marked as Bowling Green, Dual entrance? Could be but the stops appear to be a couple of three blocks apart.

...and now here I am, in my office roughly midway between the Capitol and Verizon Centre...everything looking perfectly normal outside (clear sky with almost picture-postcard-perfect scene), as if nothing had happened the past few days...what a crazy few days this was.

Yeah, typical after hurricanes.

Normally the days after a hurricane see sunny weather and it turns into a steambath (because usually the weather is quite warm and the strong sun evaporates a lot of water). Having all the rain continue yesterday is quite unusual, as is the cold weather following this kind of storm.

It's kind of misleading the way we hear about "hurricane season," though, because it implies there cannot be a hurricane or tropical storm after November 30 (in the Northern Hemisphere). But that's been proven untrue, as Tropical Storm Zeta (in 2005) and Hurricane Alice (in 1954) both formed in late December and even carried over into the following year. I guess it's sort of like deer crossing signs—some people apparently think the signs mean the deer cross the road RIGHT THERE.

just got our power back about an hour ago after losing it at about 5PM on Monday.  No real property damage in our area (western PWC) but lots of downed trees/broken telephony poles.

Most of my US clients are in NY/NJ...I haven't gotten an outside e-mail yet today.  I wonder if they'll have power back before the end of the week.
