It's not worth it for me to upgrade I feel, but I'll probably be forced into it when I do my next PC build.  Hopefully they bring back my start menu!!!

I'd almost rather they just left it out if that's all they're doing.  The right-click power menu already existed in 8.0, you just did it in the corner instead of on a start button.  Pretty pointless start button, all in all, though I know most people don't even know what the Windows key on a keyboard is for, so I guess it'll help the n00bs :P

The changes to search are very welcome, however.

I don't think the start screen is changing much, but the way it displays search results will now work more like 7, grouped by category, but displayed all at once instead of having to click separate categories.  It'll also spread the results horizontally as well as vertically, so it should be able to display a fair number of results.

Microsoft To Acquire Nokia's Mobile Phone Business For $7.2 Billion

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/09/02/microsoft-nokia-mobile-phone-deal_n_3858106.html

http://blogs.technet.com/b/microsoft_blog/archive/2013/09/02/the-next-chapter-an-open-letter-from-steve-ballmer-and-stephen-elop.aspx

it makes sense for them, Nokia is already the largest Win8 phone seller and this allows them to try and differentiate hardware from Apple and Google.

For some strange reason, I woke up this morning and thought, "Microsoft is going to make Windows 8.1 available to Technet and MSDN subscribers today"

Background, 8.1 RTMed late last month but, unlike with previous Windows releases, Microsoft announced that Technet and MSDN subscribers would have to wait for general availability (Oct. 18) to get the bits.  Needless to say there was much weeping and gnashing of teeth as these groups have always gotten releases early, usually a week or so after RTM.

And I discovered this morning first from Paul Thurrott and then http://www.theverge.com/2013/9/9/4710174/windows-8-1-msdn-technet-download-now-available

So for any techies out there who are still Technet or MSDN subscribers...IT'S ON nagES!!!

Technet is gone?  Damn.  I was going to re-sub for Windows 8.1.

You can buy one from a non-Microsoft seller and activate it before September 30th.  I bought mine from Amazon.  Haven't gotten it yet though.

Where ever you buy it, make sure you get it before Sept. 30.

Got my new Technet sub from Amazon. I had to change my order to the Pro instead of the of the Standard because it appears the there won't be Technet Standard subs available in time.

I had an active Technet account already that was to expire in October.  When Microsoft killed off Technet at the end of August, they gave us a three-month extension so that took me to January 2014 on my current subscription.  I had to call Microsoft because I was having trouble activating my new sub from Amazon.  What they ended up doing was, instead of having it be two subscriptions, the one that I already had plus the new from Amazon, they just added a year onto my already existing sub so now my existing Technet subscription expires in January 2015.

I'm psyched.

I bought 2 tickets for an office raffle for a Surface (1st gen). Nobody else did so they sent an email blast listing the features with a bunch of glamour shots of a Surface. Hoping nobody bites and I win anyway.

I upgraded. I think it's much better than 8. The context menu on the start button and the improved searching are really nice.

I have to say, RDP between two 8.1 computers is really an enjoyable experience.  The new Android RDP app is really nice, too.

I've never used RDP. I've only ever used SSH. How does it compare?

Right click on the taskbar and select Properties.  Then select the Navigation tab.  The Start Screen section is there for changing those things.
