He's already twenty-two, and he's only hitting .243 in Low A. Not a good sign...

I think he got hurt and missed the rest of the year right after he signed.  He might not be quite fully recovered yet.

What happened to this guy?

He was projected as a Tony Graffinino type and he's in his first full pro year.  Nothing happened.

Sorry, I meant what happened to him this year. He was on the DL from the last week in April until the last week in May. I can't find anything about the cause.

Thanks, that explains why he hasn't been running.

what is the expected success rate for a high second round pick? I went back and read the draft blurb on him from MLBs sight, and we took him where he was expected to go. I think Zimmerman and Strass have skewed our perception of how long it takes a college player to reach the majors/advance in the minors

College players from the 2007 draft are rule 5 eligible after this season. I use that as a rule of thumb. So call it about 3-4 years to see returns from non-premium college draft picks

would round 2 pick 1 be considered premium or would that be only high first round?

If you get a $700K+ bonus to sign, I'd consider that to be a premium pick.  Perhaps too many folks were penciling him in the Nats starting lineup and booking a weekend for him in Cooperstown a little too soon.  Let the kid play and see what happens.

I would consider Kobernus to be a premium pick. When you look at his entire resume, there really isn't anything missing. His father played pro ball, he was a three year starter at a Pac-10 school and played summer ball in the Cape Cod League. He's about as polished a player as you can hope to draft.

How is the 50th pick in the draft "premium?"  Come on guys, use your heads here.  He was picked about where he should have been, though some like John Sickels thought a few rounds high, and is PLAYING HIS FIRST PRO SEASON.

His college OPS was .757, .764, & .929 by year.  His Cape Cod OPS was .675.  He seems to be struggling with his plate discipline, something that wasn't an issue in college or his brief stint in rookie ball, so it would be safe to assume he'll adjust and move along at a normal pace.

If he debuts at the MLB level at 25, which would be the 2013 season, what exactly would be wrong with that?

He'd be just about ready for deletion in ASSCLOWN'S mind.

Once you hit 26, you cease to exist.

Also, Kobernus reminds me a lot of Jason Donald of the Indians. Am I the only one that sees that comparison?

Actually Jeff is still 21.

And he's up to .257 after going 9 for 25 over his last 6 games.

I don't know Donald well enough but when the Nationals drafted Kobernus they compared him to Mark Grudzielanek. Which looks pretty damn accurate at this point.

It's also silly to judge a team's drafting based on how individual picks turn out. Kobernus may not pan out - just like probably 45 or more of the 51 players we drafted last year won't pan out. The best thing a team can do is have good scouts/analysts, good player development in the minor leagues, and spend money to sign guys who are premium for the round in which they're drafted.

Long term, that's a successful strategy.

But if Jeff Kobernus doesn't pan out, that's just the odds of the draft.

And other times, a guy like Justin Bloxom will become a prospect despite getting drafted in the 11th round...who knows?

i still have high hopes for kobernus, no doubt about it...his last few games he's been swinging a hotter bat.

At this early stage in his development and the level he is playing, it's hard to worry about stats game to game. The more important thing is that they continue to see him work on all aspects of his game and make incremental improvements. Even if he was doing a lot better, it's still only A ball.

Kobernus has had a rough go of things. He's been injured quite a bit, and that definitely can get in the way of your development. Then when you come back and press, it's going to hurt you even more.

He's in his first full season, and clearly, the jury is still out. Hopefully he'll pick things up as he settles in and will establish himself as a legitimate prospect.

Luckily, we have a couple guys ahead of him at Potomac(Lombardozzi) and Harrisburg(Espinosa, I know he plays SS there) that project as 2B at the major league level. We're not hurting for Kobernus at the big league level, so there is time to be patient with him.

He launched his bat into the 3rd row clocking a fan on his FIRST PRO SWING.  No joke.  You can really only go up from there.

Give it time.

Hopefully that happened on the road, because if it happened at historic Centennial Field, that would have been about a 120 foot bat toss to reach the stands!
