Agreed.  Wish I had watched Benfica @Zenit St Petersburg instead (gametime temp -10F)

Wenger has lost it. His tactics have been crappy all season.

Why doesn't he give Oxlade-Chamberlain regular starts?

Great away win for City over Porto. Down 1-0 at the half, but dominated in the second. Porto hadn't lost at home in over 3 years.

Real Madrid diving and flopping around as usual.  I hope their tiny little choads freeze and fall off.

(vs CSKA Moscow on FSC)

Pity that today's games are at the same time...it's hard to get any work done while channel flipping.

USA 1-0 Italy. First win in 11 all time games over Italy. Now just to beat them in the World Cup.

Question - best American since 1990, when we returned to the world cup?  Field players, only, because it is hard to compare goalkeepers to field players.

Nominees?  Tab Ramos, Claudio Reyna, Clint Dempsey, Landon Donovan.   Others?

without doing any research, i find it hard to believe anyone can compare to dempsey's past two seasons in europe. i'd like to see what donovan could do in a full season in england, instead of just getting loaned there for a month and tearing it up

John Harkes and Alexei Lalas were good, but I'd have to go with Dempsey.  Unless we are talking goaltenders, in which case there are several candidates.

I thought Tab Ramos was the best of that first generation, in terms of skill.  Playing in Spain and then with an inferior cast in New York, plus injuries, probably made him less prominent here than Harkes (England / DC), but I thought Ramos was the better player.

Dempsey is doing things no other American has the confidence to try.  He's probably had more success over the past couple of years than any other American.   Of course, he's been my favorite since his days playing in New England, but I always thought I was watching him with homer bias when I thought he was the best of the current Americans.

I agree Donovan should be playing full time for Everton.  That is a great match of player and team.

As for keepers, I sort of feel like I did when I rooted for Bird v. Magic.  For years, I always thought Keller was the best, but I have to admit Friedel's accomplishments and longevity at this point has paased him.

Watching ESPN2 soccer.   There was a game on between Liverpool and Arsenal.    Arsenal won and V. Persie (sp) walked over to the Gunner fans, took off his jersey and threw it into the crowd.    A camera shot in that sequence showed a large, overly white guy with no shirt on.   He had his scarf and an Arsenal tattoo over his heart.   He had his hands raised as he stood cheering.   Next thing, he fell over ... booom  .... into the crowd.   He was down for the count.    First thing that came to my mind was 8 or 10 pints of the good stuff.   You could just tell that's what it was.    LOL    Classic   ...
