Goose Goslin: "We're going to knock the beer out of them, and we're going to show them New York Mugs that we are World Serious".

(Goose's prediction for4 Opening Day, 1933, which roughly coincided with the end of prohibition.)

Are you in the city?

Yep. Washington Heights...short subway ride from Yankee Stadium: A train to 145th and the D one stop to River Avenue, Stadium, The Bronx.

Using the rain delay to finish Gary Sarnoff's wonderful "The Wrecking Crew of '33", also endorsed by CALSGR8. Just finished a chapter called "War at Griffith Stadium", about the Nats / Yankees brawl

Never knew that Lou Gehrig's steak included paying after being hit in the back of the head by Nats lefty Earl Whitehill. A fastball, no less. "The ball took off as if it had been batted, and bounced through the infield. Gehrig slowly fell 'like he had been poleaxed', and lost consciousness....The tough first baseman regained consciousness, asked for water, then was helped to his feet, and to the amazement of everyone, he remained in the game". I love the city.   Spent the summer of '68 in the Queens on the #7 ...  Elmhurst.   Been there before and after but that was the time.

Historical note: Griffith Stadium was one of many ballparks that did not sell beer before prohibition. The night before opening day, 1933, FDR asked Griff and the president of the NL to visit the White House. Asked if they would sell beer. Answer was, most parks, no.

FDR thought that baseball had helped to keep the nation's spirits up (ahem) during the Depression.

Well, I don't know how much Gehrig paid for his steak   ;)  but he was hit in the head a few times  (one is depicted in the biopic with Gary Cooper).

In fact, some doctors think the head injuries were the cause of his death and that he never had ALS:
