If you are going to be a conference's red-headed stepchild, you might as well be that for the conference that can pay you the most.

Tobacco Road never gave a crap about Maryland. Move on. Look forward to the Indiana/Maryland match-ups.

MD to the big 10- sad day for basketball

some how, I'm thinking if they had trouble filling the comcast center before, it's going to just get ugly now

You could be right. It's hard to know how these things will play out.

Loh was very frank about it. It's about money, and now not having to worry about money for athletics for the foreseeable future. He also said that students don't turn out in the numbers they used to, that it's all about device screens now, not butts in seats.

Things change. I'm still going to watch the Terps play basketball.

I don't really see it as a sad day. Just a different day.

It's the end of an era,  I'm not really a md fan,  but growing up around here,  I really liked acc basketball.  Football will be interesting,  they're going to have to improve fast or turn into a whipping boy

Eh... to some degree, it's the ACC, too.

The ACC has always treated Maryland a little differently (one basketball tourney in DC in 33 years, for example). With the recent expansion, the thing that used to be fun about the conference  (seeing Duke, NC State, UNC, Wake and Virginia home and away, and then again in the tourney) is gone.  There's not much "tradition" left.

Maryland is in a tough spot for football. College teams in areas with pro teams don't do as well as those in remote areas. But there are teams in the Big 10 UMD can compete with. Not Nebraska, Penn State, or Ohio State, but Indiana, Northwestern, Illinois.

Shrug. Better minds than mine put this in motion. I'm still a Terrapin fan.

College conferences are meaningless as far as tradition is concerned. The ACC basketball ceased to exist once the member schools stopped playing each twice every season. Now UMD gets to continued the fine tradition of getting sanduskied by Penn State every year.

I was listening to WTOP sports while driving earlier and the guy said Maryland's record against Penn State in football is 1–35–1. Wow.

Yep. Terrible. But Penn State was better then, and Maryland is worse now. No, wait... yeah, that's right.

Maryland will play in the Leader division: Illinois, Indiana, Ohio State, Penn State, Purdue, Wisconsin.

There's something humorous about Maryland football being a leader,  but no worse than when Rodgers becomes a legend

you could have gone straight to the three hole joke without spending time on the tradition thing.

WTOP's story includes the following interesting statement:

Quote
Maryland will become the southernmost member of the Big Ten member starting in 2014.

Just what position are those people in College Park assuming in their new league?

Campus?  <---  a guess as to what they were talking about.   If my calculations are correct, with the expansion into Jersey the Big Ten will now have 10 states instead of 10 teams.

EDIT:    Never mind, forgot about Nebraska.

Also, Bloomington, IN is 39° 9' 55" N; College Park, MD is 38.9806 N  ...   damn close Half.   Google shows that each degree of latitude is approximately 69 miles.    Looking at a map of the US however, the southern point of Indiana looks further south than MD.   Any geography majors?

You pretty much killed it. What would you need a Geography major for? ;)

I can't believe I have to sit through this, and then another whole season of this ACC crap before I get to watch Maryland in the B1G.

Even though it's a money grab, I think Maryland fans will be pleasantly surprised at how quickly Penn State, Rutgers and Ohio State become rivals  ...  yea hated rivals.     Play Ohio State, Michigan, Michigan State, Penn State, Indiana, Northwestern, Rutgers, Wisconsin, etc. in football and basketball.   In ten years, you'll wonder what the hell you ever saw in those girls on tobacco road?

Money grab. You make it sound so ugly. ;)

I'd go with the solid employer that was giving me a 100% raise, too.

And I can't wait to see Indiana/Maryland in basketball.

Have fun with your 48-40 snoozefest basketball games and 16-3 snoozefest football games. Bor1ngest conference in all the land.

Boring?   You enjoy watching floppin' Duke and whining Carolina?    That's just their football programs.    Personally, I'll take a 16-14 slugfest at Michigan Stadium or the Horseshoe any day.    A snoozer of Maryland at Indiana or Ohio State on the hardwood can't be any worse than watching Pitt vs Clemson in January.
