Nats scouting Javier Vazquez

http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/nationals-journal/wp/2013/01/03/nationals-scouting-javier-vazquez/

I'd bet we're a longshot to get him, the article says the Nats want to offer a minor league contract with an out-date if he isn't added to the major league roster.  I imagine there are more than a few teams, including the Marlins, that would give him a 1 year major league deal and offer him a shot at a rotation spot.

Also kind of a longshot - sign Vasquez or someone like him and put them in the rotation and Detwiler in the pen.  If Vasques (or whoever) sucks, then just cut them and make Detwiler the 5th guy.  Kind of the same thing that happened last year with CMW.

Buster Olney, lineups:

Quote
5. Washington Nationals
Regardless of whether Adam LaRoche re-signs or if Mike Morse winds up playing a lot of first base, Washington will have a complete lineup, with on-base percentage (Jayson Werth, Bryce Harper), power (Harper, Ryan Zimmerman, Ian Desmond, Danny Espinosa), balance (possibly three left-handed hitters and one switch-hitter in the everyday lineup) and speed (Denard Span, Harper, Desmond, Werth).

A tangible difference: Manager Davey Johnson likes to play a lot of guys and rest his regulars, and that's good, because Washington looks as if it should have an incredibly deep bench. The Nationals have two regular catchers (Kurt Suzuki and Wilson Ramos), the versatile Steve Lombardozzi and Roger Bernadina, possibly Morse, Tyler Moore and Chad Tracy. Oh, and some of the Nationals' pitchers can hit, from Stephen Strasburg (.277 batting average) to Jordan Zimmermann.

Matt Diaz's deal with the NYY is for $1.2MM but is a minor league contract.  If Vasquez would sign a minor league contract with us, this team has shown a willingness to go up to $5MM for rotation insurance in the minors.

I'd do that in a heartbeat.  Vazquez on a one year, 5 Mil minor league deal with an opt out in June would be fine.  I think this would be awesome but I feel some other team will give him a starting job, though there may not be a more enticing team than the Nats if he wants to make another playoff run.

You guys wanted Fielder too.   How's. That working for ya!   Last thing we need is another outfielder!   Besides they would want the whole farm for him and Bryce!

Fielder on the Nats would have worked out great. Just as it did in Detroit.

you're right, that would have been a disaster, one of the best power hitting first basemen in the game- we'd sure be screwed there

That 1 WAR improvement in 2012 over ALR would have been so worth the extra $11MM last year and the remaining 8 years and $190+MM he's owed.  It kept us from the best record in baseball.

Oh, wait.
