Werth may still be our best leadoff hitter.
I agree, but I like the idea of Werth being able to drive in Span and also taking a ton of pitches right infront of Zimmerman.

I just like that now the Nats have a guy who profiles as a leadoff hitter. Although I have considered Werth a fantastic leadoff hitter, not sure he likes the spot. I would make the decision on whatever Werth is most comfortable with since, to be honest, his contract and experience give him some weight in the discussion.

I think Werth likes winning.  If he can best help the team win by leading off, he'll do that.  If it's in the 2 or 5 hole, fine.  Wouldn't be shocked if we see Werth and Span share the 1-2 spots depending on matchups at times, though Davey does like to keep things consistent...

Goodness, ALR is down to 58.6% in the poll.
I know I voted Roachie, and have stumped for him a bit, but I really don't have any super strong feelings one way or the other.  I'd love to see LaRoche back, but I really wouldn't be too torn up if Morse or Moore get the nod.  It's really a nice spot for the Nats to be in.

I was looking at that slash line, other than his BA, vs. RHP, ALR came out ahead of Morse in both career and 2012.  But if we're talking vs. righties (which is where the conversation started) and we're talking wOBP, we're splitting hairs, especially considering ALR has 200% more ab's than Morse does.

Good points.  LaRoche's OPS is a little better against RHP.  Morse is a little worse against righties but a lot better against lefties.  I think, offensively, it may be a wash.  Assuming LaRoche doesn't get any worse as he is aging.

Speculation is that there was a problem with Napoli's physical.

I think the Red Sox are having second thoughts.

Zuck with an update:

http://www.natsinsider.com/2012/12/why-laroche-wont-be-rushed.html#more

he speculates LaRoche won't sign until Texas knows where Josh Hamilton is going.  If Hamilton leaves, Texas would come after LaRoche.

Well they lost Torii Hunter to the tigers this offseason but I think they would try and move one of their young guys in Bourjos or Trumbo if they landed Hamilton.

With Hamilton going to the Angels, I still don't see Texas giving ALR a 3 year deal and forfeiting their first round pick.  I think ALR stays in DC.

Angels sign Hamilton for $125 million.

Nats sign some international prospect for $225,000.

Is this going to come down to Texas again?  Last year it was thought it would be the Nats and Texas for Fielder and now this year for LaRoche?

Watch Texas offer LaRoche 3 years now in desperation.

I don't see why people think they won't give LaRoche a three year contract.  If they don't want him for the third year, they just DFA him after two.  The money is no big deal to the Rangers.  And the likelihood that that first round pick plays a day in the majors is slim.

LaRoche is gone.

This is what LaRoche was "waiting" on. Texas to lose Hamilton.

FWIW, Texas does still have Mitch Moreland - .275 / .321/ .468, 15HRs, 27 years old, and 4 more years of control.

Sure Texas can handle that but that doesn't mean it's smart to throw away 13M and a draft pick.  That reeks of desperation.

Thankfully, we have Morse to play 1B.

True.  He's also LH and played at Miss. State before Tyler Moore IIRC
