Extend Rizzo
« Topic Start: September 30, 2012, 02:51:42 PM »
Today's WP sports section is must read material, I know the Rizzo article was posted elsewhere, but there are also several charts showing where the Nats came from, and how long they will be here.  It's remarkable to see a team with this much talent that will be together for a very long period of time.

Extend Rizzo!!

For those of you who might not have seen it:

Do it. No doubt. No questioning.

In fact, give Rizzo 15 or 20% of the team, and hire him forever. Let him move to President and chose the next GM.

Honest true statement: I want them to have somebody like Bill Murray race in the racing presidents race. Or if it needs to be a politician, Joe Biden.

Rizzo, because of the deal he signed in 2010, is among the bottom 3rd GMs in salary, he'll remain there throughout 2015 (the Nats already picked up his option for 2014).  Boras stirs the pot....

I think he ended up winning some Executive of the Year award.

Several years of consistent improvement will be ignored by most because the Nats are off to a bad start this season.

No doubt, because growth from sub-60 win seasons while drafting #1 picks is tough to do, can't be more than 29 other executives in the league who could have pulled that off.

Drafting Strasburg and Harper were ballsy picks.  How dare you!

I remember the analysts BLASTING~! Rizzo for picking Harper over Delino DeShields, Jr.

How many combined games did Harper and Strasburg play in between 2009 and 2011 when our win count jumped by 21 (59-80)? I'll give you a head start and point out Harper player in 0. So can you explain how Strasburg alone was responsible for the 21 win jump? I won't even bring up 2012, though that is the year we made the big 18 win jump (80-98).

Big Meech - While Mattheus looks like an idiot after breaking his hand, he was effective last year as a rookie and a product of the Joe Beimel trade.  He is one of those TJ guys when Rizzo picked him up who worked out well.

In addition to Strasburg, he also drafted Storen in 2009.  That was not an automatic pick.  Can't call it a bust.

The Gio trade and the Span trade also stripped out high end talent that would be in AA or AAA now.

We still have Karns in AA.   I don't think you can blast the pitching draft choices.   We lack some system product depth in the high minors more or less because his highest draft choices (Stras, Storen) were quick to the majors and several other high end prospects ended up part of deals.

and how well have some of the regular bottom feeders been doing with those picks? We lucked into generational talents no doubt but if you really think the goal wad to suck so we could draft Harper and Strasburg I think you're foolish. If you think the goal.was to build via the draft and/or prospects, I agree.

and up until the game 5 disaster, Storen had looked to be a borderline stud closer. I think we've seen what not having a reliable closer is doing for us now.

Even if this team stumbles to a disappointing 85-ish win season that would be the second winning season for the Nationals.

What "former selves" are you referring to?

We've never been first in that case. Your "former selves" still makes no sense.
