For anyone thinking about trying Morrowind at some point.

There's also this, for those who prefer the more manual/painful approach:

A couple of screenies of Morrowind with modern mods (I have no idea what mods or what versions of those mods, and these shots are likely cherry picked):

And here's a comparison shot someone posted on Reddit of Morrowind "stock" vs "with mods" as of 2008:

Went ahead and re-installed my old copy of Morrowind GOTY last night, I'll be happy to post some sample vids of the "stock" game if anyone's interested (and then I guess if anyone cares, I'll try the overhauled version as well).

I'll start a new thread for this if people have any interest.

I know I posted one similar to this before, but damn I just love the draw distances and distant detail in this game:

Started a second file. I'm a high elf mage with a magnificent goatee. I'm working through the Winterhold College right now.

Are you on pc?  There are mods to handle save game management, or you could just rename the save folder when starting a new character, to keep them separate.

Also, freak the Altmer

I, for one, would prefer the Morrowind posts stay here. I'd feel differently if they were unrelated but from what I understand it is one continous story.

That morrowind water looks better than skyrim water in screenshots.

There is a mod available which helps out Skyrim water a lot. It bugged me enough that it was one of the first mods I applied.

Tell me your Steam ID and you can curse at me too ;)

Me too. Mine is Obed_Marsh.

I went on another binge on Monday and have reached level 22 and have been rouding out the character as a Mage. In descending skills, Descruction (51), Archery (51), Enchanting* (43), Sneak (43), Alchemy (38), Speech (31), Aleration (29), Illusion (28), Conjuration (27). Restoration (25). I have recently stopped wearing armor and using stoneflesh instead. Once I became Arch Magus with the spiffy robes it seemed like a no brainer. It took me a bit to warm up to the rest of the magic, at first I was heavily focused on Destruction.

*I know it has its critics but I find it fun. :mg:

BTW, where do you need to go to improve the Orchish, Elvish, Drawvian, Glass, etc. items? Is it a Skyforge thing? Each time I try to research it online, I come across spoilers I don't want to see.

You need to level and perk smithing to improve anything other than iron.

I thought it was only to improve them *more*?  I know my lv20 Orc has some spare Elvish gear that I can improve even though I don't have the elvish perk.  I guess it may be tied to your smithing skill, too.

That said, if you're playing as a mage, armor and armor spells are both a waste of time/mana once you've got the overcharge and stagger perks for destruction.  My lv42 Mage has no armor, never uses armor spells anymore, still has 100 health, and blasts the crap out of anything.  Just my opinion of course - I guess you could make an argument for upping health and wearing some armor to protect from the occasional stray arrow or baddie who happens to get in close, but between destruction stagger, unrelenting force, and good old fashioned strafe-dodging, I just don't see the return being worth the investment.

The best thing to do is get gear with fortify destruction enchants, thus reducing the cost of casting.  If you don't have any of that, I'd say fortify magicka enchants are still better than % regen enchants since regen slows way the hell down during combat anyway.

Must just be smithing level then I guess.  I couldn't improve anything but iron gear with my Mage.

You can only create Dwarven/Elven/etc armor if you reach a certain Smithing level but you can improve any non-magical items without any perks.

Being able to create varying classes of armors and weapons is dependent on having the requisite perks, but you can improve types of gear that you don't have the perks for (though as Nathan points out, it may be dependent on your smithing skill level).

Yes, you're correct, I mis-typed - it's perks, not Smithing level. The ability to edit may be based on your level.

My Heavy armor-wearing Orc is lv20 now and I must say, I wish they'd fleshed smithing out a little more...  on the one hand, it's too easy to power-level it through training or spamming minor items, but on the other hand if you just play it "normally" you'd NEVER progress to new gear types because let's face it, you really only need to make one set of armor at each step.

Actually ran into a boss I couldn't beat last night with my lv22 Orc.  Nasty dual-wielding spectral Orc boss with a Draugr Scourge sidekick.  I finally managed to split them up and take out the Draugr, but was still having no luck with the Orc.  Eventually I Fus Ro Dah'd him and he got stuck in the level geometry

I'm not too proud to say that I went ahead and stood just out of his range and hacked him to death

Another cool thing I ran into last night - a random group of Stormcloaks and Imperials duking it out in the middle of the countryside.  Having not yet chosen a side myself, I just stood back and looted the bodies as they fell :mg:

Cooking is overpowered

tl;dw

power attacks only require one stamina point, and there are three recipes that give you constant stamina regen for 12 minutes at a time, hence you can do unlimited power attacks for 12 minutes per recipe.

elsweyr fondue increases your magicka pool by 100 for 12 minutes.  Quite handy for magical and non-magical types alike who occasionally want to use a spell that they normally wouldn't have enough magicka for.

I wish it was more fleshed out, honestly.  Learn new recipes, find recipes in books, more powerful buff foods for higher level cooking skill, etc.  Also, add fishing and archaeology :P
