Aren't Zim's lack of all-star appearances due to him being a mediocre hitter in the first half including a .243/.301/.389 mark in June when all-star voting heats up?

If he put up a .900 career OPS in May and June rather than July and August, he'd probably go to more all-star games.

Eh, the last two seasons, his mediocre hitting has been due to him being injured

tangentially related:  It is shocking how few all-star games Chipper Jones has gone to.  In 1999 he won the MVP and didn't go to the all-star game.

Bump.  Fangraphs article on his offensive improvement this year.  As has been pointed out above, the jump in power is what separates this season from the past ( http://www.wnff.net/index.php?topic=16411.225;msg=1065271 ):
Quote
Through 385 plate appearances, Desmond already has 17 home runs. For reference, Desmond has hit just 18 home runs in his last two seasons combined. Throughout his career, Desmond has relied on pull-power for home runs. While he’s still very dependent on his ability to hit home runs to left field, Desmond has has begun to slug to all fields for the first time in his career. Coming into this season, Desmond had never hit a home run to the opposite field. He’s already hit three this year.
...
Desmond new-found ability to hit for power is definitely surprising, but his ability to do so to all fields was really unpredictable, especially after last season. Desmond only hit eight home runs last season, all of which were pulled to left. He didn’t hit any home runs to center or to the opposite field in 2011. And while half of his home runs were hit to center in 2010, he was still a slightly below-average hitter up-the-middle. Desmond needs to retain those improvements to center and to the opposite field, because there’s no way that his 47.4% HR/FB rate to left is sustainable going forward.

The other things the article emphasizes is his improvement v. RHP
Quote
After struggling to hit same-handed pitchers over his career, Desmond has finally emerged as an above-average option against them at the plate. And, obviously, his improvement against righties has been a contributor to his power surge. After two season of sub-par slugging numbers against righties, Desmond has managed to raise his slugging percentage to .482 against them this year.

Speaking of Desmond.

Lorb was on the radio this morning and said he didn't expect Desmond back till late August/early September.

I think it'll be closer to September 15... but generally speaking, don't expect Desmond back anytime soon.

Desmond has already been on the DL for 17 days.  He'll be back in two weeks, three weeks tops.

Desmond may be on the DL, but he looked healthy enough yesterday to win the Olympic Gold in the decathlon.

Ashton Eaton looks so much like Desmond it's scary.

Posted at 04:15 PM ET, 08/15/2012  Ian Desmond ready for return: ‘If my name’s in the lineup, I’m going to play’  By Adam Kilgore
Today could be the final game the Nationals play this year without Ian Desmond. Manager Davey Johnson said he hoped to activate Desmond at Nationals Park on Friday if all went well with his workouts, and this afternoon Desmond said he is ready to go.

Quote from: Bill Ladson
Desmond was in good spirits after his early hitting session, to the point that he pulled a good-natured joke on his manager. Desmond went into Johnson's office and said, "I'm hurting." Fearing another injury or a setback, Johnson replied, "Oh, no. How bad is it?"

"He said, 'My ears are hurting from the loud sound coming off my bat,'" Johnson said. "He got me. ... That was a good sign."

I think the Nats have a higher winning % without Desmond in the lineup than with.

DFA Desmond.

Thrilled to have him back!  What happens to Lombo, who quietly is having a sensational hitting run?

That's only because Zimmerman, Espinosa, and Morse started hitting.  Nothing to do with Desmond

He'll play 2nd and left occasionally.  he'll also come off the bench as a pinch hitter

returns to the bench for a very limited time, b/c he's still going to get three starts a week.  (they'll bring back desmond slowly, give espinosa a breather once a week, and then let harper/werth/morse get a day off with lombo playing LF)

if there's six games a week, he's going to be in the line-up for at least three games, i guarantee it.

I don't see him getting much time in LF.  I think Moore gets those starts when they want to give one of the 3 a night off.  He'll spell Zim, Desmond and Danny.
