2013 MLB Draft
« Topic Start: October 15, 2012, 08:58:25 PM »
I know it's a little early, but i just think the draft is so cool.  Anyways I just wanted to post some guys to keep an eye on that could wind up with the nats.

Karsten whitson RHP Miami:  #9 overall pick by the padres in 2010 and turned down $2mm to attend Miami.  Posted a dominant freshman season followed by an injury plagued one.  He still has good stuff and is one of the biggest wild cards in the draft.  He could be around when the nats pick at 31 and given Rizzo's propensity to pick injured stars I think Whitson is a guy to watch.

Aaron Judge OF Fresno st:  This guy is quite the physical specimen.  Standing at 6'7" 230lbs I can't help but compare him to mike stanton.  This dude has crazy power potential but has yet to show any of it in games.  He also has a great eye, ability to hit for average, and is a good baserunner (13-15 SB last year).  Could rocket up draft boards if he taps into his potential.  Probably my personal favorite player in the draft.

Kohl Stewart RHP St. Pius X HS:  Doubtful that he falls to us but he is considered one of the top QB prospects in the country and is committed to play at Texas A&M.  Touches 97 mph with the heater, an above average slider with plus potential, and an average change up with above average potential.  Could fall, but probably not all the way down to us.

Ryan Boldt OF Red Wing HS:  Very fast with good baserunning instincts.  Plus defense in center with a good hit tool.  His swing doesn't project for much power due to some flaws in his swing, but some scouts see the potential for power with some mechanical corrections.

Chris Oakley RHP St. Augustine prep HS:  Very projectable high school righty with a 6'8" 230 lbs frame.  Low-mid 90's fastball with room to add more.  Complements it with a curve with plus potential and a work in progress split-change.  Sounds like a guy that could be to Rizzo's liking.

Andy McGuire SS James Madison HS:  The local boy.  From Vienna, VA and regarded as one of the purest hitters in this years HS draft class.  Could develop decent power.  As he fills out he will probably have to move off SS to 3B or 2B

It's weird reading about McGuire on here. I didn't realize he was that highly rated that he was being talked about in the first round. (?)

I'll see him play a bunch this spring.

BA has him ranked in the top 50.

http://thedailyelkcitian.com/elk-city-oklahoma-area-sports-schools/1901-drew-ward-q95-percent-chanceq-he-will-graduate-early-enter-2013-mlb-draft

This kid was looked at as the top prospect for the 2014 draft and a near lock top 5 pick but is now entering the 2013 draft.  The one weird thing about him is that right now he is a high school junior and turns 18 later this month.  That would make him 19 and a half by the time of the 2014 draft.  So right now he's the age of an old high school senior.

The tools are loud in this kid and from what I've read it's headlined by his outstanding bat.  He's a 6'4" 210lb lefty hitting shortstop so physically he's a beast too.

Aaron Judge is a great name.

Also it would allow me to quote Judge Fudge all the time and post Judge Judy GIFs.

Sure would be good to have a 'WNFF'er' in the room:

Anybody on here have a couple extra thousands handy?

Nationals PR ‏@NationalsPR

Be in the Nats draft room when Mike Rizzo makes his first-round selection in 2013 Draft (plus premium tickets/dinner). http://auction.mlb.com/cgi-bin/ncommerce3/ExecMacro/feature.d2w/report?wl=33072944&smidx=2&sig0=sort&sig1=search&sort=term&search=SU2C

Will Rizzo leans towards HS players with upside now that the system's depleted?

Ian Clarkin sounds like a Rizzo type of pick. Great stuff, little command. Probably gone before the Nats pick though

After seeing the past couple of drafts  I think it is safe to say that Rizzo will draft the best player still on the board no matter what.  He doesn't care about the risks.  I fully expect us to get a top 10 overall talent.

Matt Skole was an 11th round draft choice in 2011. He was considered one of the better players in the AFL this season. I'm not too worried a out the farm system.

I'm going to guess college pitcher.  No idea which one.  But someone who could contribute relatively quickly.  Not a high schooler.

Doubt many quick-to-the-majors pitchers are available we are picking.

That's what we guessed last year.

I was in the front row when Corey Knebel (Texas Closer) pitched last night. Threw really hard, not much control. His curveball was nice though.
