He's now graduated from college, but I am worrying about the effect 4 years of football (playing both offense and defense) will have down the line, let alone 10 years of soccer, 6 years of lacrosse and 4 years of wrestling. I always tried to support his wishes, just don't want him drooling at 60.

Honestly what is the big deal about signing someone to a major league deal if that's what you want to do.  If anything it places a hinderance on using a top 40 spot and again amply increases the likelihood of not being able to cover players in the Rule 5 draft and other avenues.

You get  a prospect like Wily Mo Pena who has to be rushed to the majors b/c his options run out when he's 19, and it impairs his development permanently.  He cannot stay as a regular in the MLB line up to work on his defects, so he plateaus way too early.

If Rizzo loses a 1st round draft pick for signing one of the big 6 free agents, then I expect him to make a full-court press to trade for one that another team gets in the competitive balance lottery.

Looking at #16, Gavin Cecchini's brother Garin  is one the Red Sox top prospects and was rated the #2 prospect in the NYPL by BA and #7 in the organization.  There's some discussion of Gavin in this thread here from SOSH.  There is a question of whether Gavin can stick at SS, but might be the best hitting high school SS since Machado.

Gavin is supposed to be better.

Agreed, Blue.  It just is interesting he has a decent pedigree, like Justin Upton had.  Hulet has Garin as #3 in the Boston system, FWIW.  The link has some interested discussion of Gavin.

I agree on Dahl.  I think that kid has a chance to be a stud.

The Nats have the 16th pick? Who is likely to fall to them?

guys i like that could land there include:
Lance Mccullers-Ace upside but is a little undersized and some see him as a reliever
Gavin Cechini-HS shortstop looks like solid all around tools plus bloodlines
Joey Gallo-HS first baseman with MONSTER power.  looks like a young joey votto offensively
Matt Smoral-big lefty (6'8", 225 lbs) is in HS and seems like a Rizzo-type big arm
Marcus Stroman-i thought he was a reliever but he made BA's pre-season all american collegiate team as a starter.  According to BA an AL scout said that he has the best stuff in the class.  He is only 5'9" but could stay a starter, possibly. He's also a former nats draftee from '09 so maybe we still like him.

At this point a lot of the top HS guys could fall or guys we've never heard of could skyrocket.  It's really to early to tell, but it is fun to think about.

Not that I mind what we got with our previous #1 picks, but it'll certainly be nice to be having a real discussion about who we get with our first pick this year.  In years gone by it was always a foregone conclusion.

It wasn't last year -- I actually thought last year was fascinating as there were 6 players who clearly separated themselves from the pack, and we were wondering which would fall to us.

But I agree, the years we had 1-1 was pretty boring, despite the awesomeness of getting Strasburg and Harper.

For all the discussion last year, I don't think anyone dreamed we'd have Rendon fall to us.  It may something about Baseball America that all of their top 20 is composed of kids 6' 1" or taller.  Even McCullers is listed as 6' 2".

Power seems to be more rare than before, so Gallo among those that ZDK mentions looks interesting.  Figure a HS 1B takes 3 or 4 years to develop, maybe more, and he'd be up in the majors towards the end of the Werth deal when 1B might be open (testing my clairvoyance).

Don't want a 1B only player with the first pick. Too limited in positions. I'd go after top SP, middle infielder, 3B, or CFer out there.

Because that kind of power grows on trees? Take the power if you can- pitching may be hard to acquire, but look what a good mashing 1b goes for

Plus we are going to need some lefty power after we lose harper to free agency
