The Nats could.always draft a new catcher in the first round. Well the best one money can buy with the 30th pick.

Rizzo said today that he started this deal about a week before the deadline but it got hung up.

Some more from BP:

Quote
Nats catchers have hit pretty poorly this season, posting a collective .236/.295/.353 line. Even worse, the two guys responsible for most of the offensive highlights—Wilson Ramos (.256/.347/.390) and Jhonatan Solano (.294/.333/.529)—are injured. The two catchers on the active roster before the trade—Jesus Flores (.228/.265/.329) and Sandy Leon (.250/.357/.333)—haven’t fared nearly as well. With Ramos out for the season after undergoing multiple knee surgeries to correct a torn meniscus and ACL and Solano nursing a strained oblique, the Nats had some incentive to make a move. Leon will likely be an immediate victim of the trade, along with Triple-A catcher Carlos Maldonado, who was designated for assignment to make room for Suzuki on the 40-man roster.

Suzuki seems like an unlikely candidate to offer any help on offense given that his .200 TAv in 2012 made him the American League’s worst batter (min. 250 PA). (That might explain why no AL teams claimed him when he was placed on waivers.) From 2007-2011, however, Suzuki was an above-average offense catcher, posting a .258 TAv. He’s only 28—though maybe not a young 28, given his workload over the last several seasons—and he’s hit a bit better away from Oakland, so it’s not unreasonable to expect an improvement. After the move was announced, Davey Johnson complimented Suzuki’s “veteran presence,” something in short supply on the Nationals, who have baseball’s youngest pitching staff and third-youngest collection of position players. (He also called Suzuki “a no. 1 catcher,” which suggests that he’ll see the bulk of the playing time behind the plate.) Suzuki lacks playoff experience, but he’ll get some if he can stay healthy for two more months.

In mid-July, shortly after Solano’s started experiencing discomfort, this paragraph appeared in the Washington Times:

One Nationals official, asked this week about the organization's possible desire to deal for a catcher before the trade deadline, brushed that off as speculation because of how comfortable the team is with Flores and how highly they think of not just Solano, but Leon.

Admittedly, the Nats didn’t make a deal for a catcher before the deadline. It took them three additional days. The moral of the story is that no matter what team executives might say about how happy they are with their weak point, they’re almost certainly working on a way to fix it. —Ben Lindbergh

LOL. Dude, I'm a Nats fan as well.  I watch nearly every Nats game, and go to Nats town often.

I'm just saying that this team has major talent...World Series talent...and if Ramos is hurt, I don't mind upgrading the Catcher position at all.  Kurt Suzuki isn't the answer though.
You must not have seen him play to say that, rizzo got him because his arm is sick

He appears to be a clone of Flores w/ a bat in his hand. If he has a better arm I guess it's a net win for the Nats.

Nice bat tonight.  0-3 with a strikeout.

I'm telling you.  Suzuki is not a good catcher.

3 ABs is definitely a significant enough sample size to determine who is good at what.

Maybe not, but the .BA, .OBP, and .SLG sure tell me something...

Not to mention his outstanding contributions to the HR and RBI category.

And I think this move will help Flores, as he'll get more rest and will be more fresh.  He was playing well when he was backing up Ramos at the beginning of the season.

yeah not sure why some thought that (but it's the usual suspects).

[edit] And any judgment you have reached about whether Suzuki will or will not be successful with the bat in DC off of three at bats is absolutely absurd.  [edit]

[edit]

And I can safely make the assumption Suzuki won't be successful.  Players don't struggle for years and then just turn it on in some other city.  If they are mediocre at best, odds are they'll stay that way.  It's not like they get to face a staff of Masterson, Jimenez, Kluber, Seddon everyday

Tribe Time, there's a pretty reflexive dislike of fans from other teams around here, and it's definitely a shame and a problem. We do have a White Sox fan whom everybody likes, and I don't know what his trick is, but you're cool so stick around.

EDIT:  And off the top of my head David Ortiz, Adrian Gonzalez, and Josh Hamilton are just a few players who a change of scenery did wonders for.  Just saying.

dude nobody is saying suzuki is the savior.  he's going to be the #1 the rest of the year until ramos comes back next year.  and to say he's struggled for all these years ...

08 - .279 AVG, 7 HR, 42 RBI, 2nd in CS, 3.5 WAR
09 - .274 AVG, 15 HR, 88 RBI, 4th in CS, 3.1 WAR
10 - .242 AVG, 14 HR, 71 RBI, 1.9 WAR
11 - .237 AVG, 13 HR, 44 RBI, 3rd in CS, 1.5 WAR

and in 2012 while his offensive numbers are down, he led the AL in caught stealing and is 1st in fielding percentage.

No, you have to stop saying things like "Believe me", "It's not even close", and "The truth hurts" when you are expressing your opinion.

Christ, do I have to explain myself to everyone?

Dude, just step away from the fight... like I said in my last post, most of us aren't gonna pick fights with you, but the people that are gonna pick fights, ignore them. You have my respect as a good citizen of WNFF until you lose it, not the other way around.

All I'm saying is Suzuki isn't the catcher people think he is.  And I like how you clipped only '08-'11.  You forgot 2007 and 2012.  Ramos will be a good player, and I'm not happy the Nats traded a good young catcher in Frietas to the A's for a guy who is mediocre at best.  Given some more time, Frietas could have blossomed into a great young catcher.
