Another question... is Harper under Nationals control for 6.75 more seasons or 5.75?

So there seems to be some that believe there is an outside chance they will keep him longer than 7 years and that Lerner will pony up when the time comes to do so with #34, basically it will be up to Harper to decide if he wants to own Washington

It would seem to me a player in Harper's position, at the end of his first contract, would have the world at his feet (assuming he's as good as we all think he will be).  The determining factor (aside from the money) should be the team that has the best shot at winning.  If it's the Nationals, I think he would stay.

Is there at least a chance we make an attempt to extend Harper/keep him when the time comes you guys think? Just hearing someone say we are likely to make a run at it would make me feel a whole lot better...

From another thread;

We're not the Oakland A's or Milwaukee Brewers. This franchise is located in Washington DC. If we become highly competitive and Harper/Strasburg are catalysts then the Lerners will NOT let them walk in 5 or so years.

Washington DC is a big market city with fair weather fans. This team starts winning and you will see this team start cashing in and every box will be filled and all those highly priced tickets will be bought.

The Nats can look at the Caps or Wizards as a guide. If you struggle, the city will leave you for dead. You win and have stars, you will become a cash cow. Our ownership will realize that and not let star talent walk. The Washington DC market is right there with New York, Boston, etc. This will become a destination franchise with the right management running the show and the needed star power on the field.

Yea, good post.

I did not realize that the Lerners are the richest ownership group IN BASEBALL!

What this means to me is; they didn't get that way without realizing that to make money you have to spend money sometimes. They know Harper has a chance to make them more than a huge contract would. I could see them giving him the first $300 million dollar deal in baseball before he's even eligible for free agency. I don't care if he's a Boras client, how would you turn that down?

I said it when we drafted him;

I think he signs the first, and maybe only, $300 million contract in baseball history.

My only fear is one day he wakes up and realizes he's burnt out on baseball from his life long grind. That's truly my only thought as to why Bryce Harper may not be a sure fire HOFer.

In what universe does this happen?

He won't get burnt out. This is all he wants. He's no more likely than anyone else out there, ya know?

My only concern--is I want him in Washington AT LEAST until he's 31 or 32. period. If that means 10 years at $300 million when he's 21 (I believe he'll be one of the top players in baseball as soon as two years from right now) then so be it.

I am selfish, I do want him beyond his arbitration years, and so what if I do. The guy has rejuvenated my love for this game. I am selfish when it comes to Harper and to a lesser degree, Stras. But Harper is the future and the present and all that. He is the crown jewel of our baseball camelot. You do whatever it takes to keep him, period.

I'm not worrying about it, whatsoever. The Nationals understand what is at stake. He'll probably begin conversations about a long term contract in 2014 and they'll get it done.

Do you think some Nats fans paranoia about it is just that? General paranoia?

Scott Boras <3's this organization. We suck him off non-stop.

Not worried whatsoever. Bryce Harper will not leave this team unless it's in his 30's, if ever. If we're a highly competitive club, he'll be paid his due.

just enjoy his 7 years of awesome service here, then move on. Who cares if he goes to the Yankees. The Cards fans aren't bitter that Pujols left.

If it comes down to $, we should be able to offer him as big of a deal as anyone.

That's not the point. He will declare free agency and reject any extensions until he can test the market. Then he will sign if the Nats offer the best deal.
