Eh, I don't know about that. The Angels have much better players all around. They should be in the playoffs. The Tigers? I don't know. They have one of, if not, the best 3-4 connection in the entire league, but they don't really have much offensively aside from those two. Fielder would not have been able to take that team himself. Verlander can only do so much every 5th day.... then again, he put the Tigers on his back last year by himself and won the MVP because of it. I'd say it could go either way for the MVP title too, but triple crown is really hard to do  .

Like JCA said, Trout really did improve the team, but I think without him, the Angels would've started competing anyway. Without Miggy, the Tigers probably wouldn't be where they are right now.

At least the Angels have the excuse of the division they're in, with the Rangers and the ridiculously surprising As - Tigers play in a miserable division - really no excuse for them to suck as much they did

LOL at Miguel Cabrera losing MVP in a triple crown season. Not saying Trout doesn't deserve it, but damn what more could Cabrera have done?

I dunno, maybe not had the worst defense at third base in all of baseball? Maybe slimmed down and stolen a few more bases?

Triple Crown is antiquated from a time when RBIs mattered. They don't. They're a result of the people hitting in front of you. Cabrera had 205 PAs with men in scoring position, Trout had 133. You hit Trout 4th in that lineup and Trout has as many RBIs as Cabrerra.

It isn't the award for the most valuable hitter. It's player. Cabrerra is NOT  complete player. He's a liability in the field and he's mediocre on the base paths. Trout is the best player. He plays elite defense. He runs the bases very well, is an excellent base stealer, hits for an elite average and hit 30 home runs. Not exactly a small amount.

Trout isn't having the best season of the year. He's having one of the best seasons in the history of baseball.

This. This is one of the most amazing seasons ever.

Trout has 49 steals and 30 homers. This is the total list of players who have had 49 steals and 30 homers in one season: Barry Bonds, Eric Davis.

Ironically, Davis didn't win the MVP. Bonds did though. Trout has been more successful than Bonds was. Has a higher average. And scored more runs.

Oh and if Darwin Barney doesn't win a GG, then the award is completely meaningless

RA shouldn't win the Cy Young just because he plays for the Mets.  Don't give that franchise ANY hope of ever mattering in the grand scheme of things.

UZR is bullcrap and so is RZR, DRS, and every other measure of defense that does not confirm my bias and shows others consistently better
.

That's what you really mean, right?  Zimmerman is impressive with getting to balls most 3B wouldn't (thus his high OOZ), but you can't say he was "steady" and was as consistent at converting balls he got to into outs.

Can't the league have a "Player of the Year" award?  Would fix this debate really fast.

The Sporting News has been awarding a " Player of the Year" for over 80 years

I didn't think you did, I just looked it up and figured it was cool to post.  No worries!  ;)

Also, Nats finish with the best run-differential this year.  As of right now, they also have sole possession of the number one record overall with 98 wins!  Great year!

And, the Nats are the only team with 98 wins.  Best record through and through.  Best Run Differential.  Most complete team in baseball right here.

Nats were tied for third in OPS+ and second in ERA+.  So, third best offense and second best pitching in the NL.

Giants (when you include Melky) and Cards were tied for first in OPS+ but were around league average in pitching.  Barves had league average hitting but were just behind the Nats in pitching.

He was probably either 1st or 3rd on most ballots.  Scoring was 5 for first, 3 for second, 1 for third.
