Thanks.  The college (hockey east) games have been hyped for quite a while and will sellout, of course.  It is a great venue for hockey when they did this for the winter classic.

Yeah, my cousin went when it was there!  He had a great time.  Got me a pin and baseball from it!

bump.  Out of the exams and holiday break.  My bulldogs look like they are in rebuilding mode and pretty mediocre.   Lost to Quinnipiac last night 2-1.  I'm just hoping they get their act together for March because I think the only way they make it to the NCAAs is to win the ECAC tournament.

Hitting up Minnesota-Duluth vs. UNO on Friday.  You should be able to view it on the network formerly known as Versus.

That'll be a great game.  Isn't UMD #1 in the polls?

UMD #1.  Sadly, yale outside the top 20 for the first time in a few years, I think.

They're having a terrible year.

The whole conference needs an upgrade.  It would be nice to see the non-Ivys try to get some great players like Hockey East.  I think Union is the only non-Ivy barred from offering athletic scholarships, no?

Probably, the patriot league teams all caved (feinstein may have to rewrite his book) so I know Colgate now offers for hockey

I'm reasonably certain that Clarkson, Quinnipiac, St. Lawrence and RPI do as well.  Union was barred from offering scholarships due to some obscure rule (which escapess me right now) when they joined Div. I.

Dunno.

Actually, there was a great article in the NYT discussing the revival of Ivy athletics since the schools increased need-based grants to more of their student body.  They cite Harvard hoops, Yale hockey, and Cornell Volleyball as sports that have benefited.  They are more likely to land athletes from middle income families now because the aid packages are equal or superior in some sports.  For example, an Ivy package in lacrosse or baseball now can be better than a quarter or half scholarship in some of the lesser revenue sports.   As some of the Harvard hoops players said, Ammaker can go after guys recruited by multiple D1 programs if he can say, "yes, you might pay $7K a year to go here rather than a full ride elsewhere, but you walk out with a Harvard degree."  That seems to be working.  I'd imagine Cornell will become a college power again soon, and am surprised that Harvard isn't strarting to bounce back to the 80s level of play.

Cornell LaCrosse is constantly in the top 5 in the country.

I'd just love to see the ECAC get some love in the national polls but they're always going to be behind if they don't step it up soon.  Once The Big 10 forms in hockey there will be two power conferences and a bunch of also-rans.

I don't see the big 10 being that dominant- at most ecac schools, hockey is the big sport and everyone knows hockey players, at big ten schools, they'll be lucky to draw a crowd competing with football and basketball

Well, most of the big 10 would be the traditional hockey powers - Minnesota, Michigan, Michigan State, Wisconsin - as well as Ohio State, which has had some good teams.  I think that forming the big 10 hockey will elevate some of the focus and not diminish it.

It is too bad that the NoDaks, Denvers, UMDs, and Miamis will lose the hockey traditional league rivalries, but I suppose that a 6 team league allows for a lot of non-league games.

BTW - there is still a league within the league for the Ivies within the ECAC.  There are still banners to hoist.  However, it does not work for the Big 10 as a league within a league b/c Minnesota and Wisconsin are the only WCHA teams.

Where is Ben when we need a hockey expert?

You're gonna need those dollar beers and you're gonna want to be two-fisting all night long.  UMD is a unanimous #1 in the polls.

Yikes.

That sounds awesome.  I'll watch on TV tonight.  Wear something WNFF!

16K for a college hockey game should be really cool.

We're in for a wild finish!  About to start the 3rd, tied at 2.  Crowd has filled in nicely.  They got a little rattled after Duluth scored 2 right off the bat.  Totally different team in the 2nd.  Easy to see why umd is #1.  They are fast physical and disciplined.

Umd pours it on, shows why they're #1.  6-2 is gonna be the final.
